I ordered the Sci fi grab bag from half price books- unfortunately these are all parts of a series. Does anyone know if any of them could be read as a stand alone or out of order?

MargaretPinardAuthor The only authornive read there is Anna McCaffrey, but not that book. Still, if day you could the dozen or books of hers I‘ve read out of order. It takes a little to get into any of them anyway, 4y

RainyDayReading From what I hear the Terry Goodkind book isn‘t worth trying to read the rest of the series for. The others I‘m not sure about. 4y

There were parts of this book where i questioned was there any need for it. However, i was really happy with the ending and still really enjoyed it. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Meh. So much talking - very little showing. Pretty unimpressed with this conclusion to the #Mithermages series, though to be fair, this is one of OSC's weaker series. Great premise & the first book started out strong, but it went downhill from there. This conclusion feels a bit like he phoned it in tbh.

leslieisreading I bailed on that series after book 2 and I've pretty much bailed on OSC overall, I think. His work used to transcend his terrible views, but I don't think that it does anymore. 7y

lauren.lerner Perfectly said and I completely agree, @leslieisreading. His old stuff is still good but anything from the last 10-15 years is questionable. I do still love his anthology Maps in a Mirror; great example of how well his old works hold up vs this crap. 7y

leslieisreading I remember there were a couple off-hand remarks in the second Mithermage book related to gender that had me like "nope! I'm done." Nothing TOO egregious, but I guess I was on alert. But his old stuff was so good, it was so hard for me to believe that his views are so hateful, because it wasn't reflected in his work at all (that I noticed). (edited) 7y

lauren.lerner It's wild to think such a brilliant man who created so many wonderful works above and beyond Ender et al (The Worthing Saga! Enchantment! Pastwatch! And even though it's super Mormony if you think about it too much, I do have a place in my heart for the Homecoming quintet) holds such hateful beliefs.... until you read his newer stuff. He was always a bit squeamish of LGBT characters/themes but his old work doesn't have the hate in it. 7y

lauren.lerner Maybe I'm reaching because of nostalgia, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I really feel like he used to treat his non white, non Christian characters a lot better than I think he does now....when he bothers to write anyone who's not white or Christian that is. @leslieisreading 7y

leslieisreading I think that he did too. Although I'm hesitant to say so outright, as I pay a lot more attention to this stuff now, so I'm not sure if I'd think the same if I read it now. But I really think his work used to be better in that regard. 7y

As a writer, I love OSC; his storytelling & world building are excellent. Ender's Game will always be one of my favorite books. Buuuuuuut.... as a person, OSC is absolute homophobic, racist, & misogynistic trash. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm thrilled my library had this book in the stacks so I can read the final book of the #Mithermages series AND avoid giving my money to a such a shitty person. #lovemylibrary #OSCisanabsoluteshitofaperson #itsashamereally

Fun conclusion to a series. Everything wrapped up nicely by the end. Not as good as the classic OSC of the 1980s/1990s, but still good (especially if not comparing to past OSC works).
