3 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
From the New York Times bestselling author of THE DEAD WILL TELL comes a new short story offering a glimpse into Chief of Police Kate Burkholder's past and her Amish roots. It's autumn in Painter's Mill, and fourteen year old Katie Burkholder has been tasked with picking apples in Zimmermans Orchard with her brother. Its just another day filled with choresuntil her best friend Mattie arrives to help. Somehow, boredom transforms into fun and games whenever the girls are together. The innocent fun comes to an end when Billy Marquardt and his gang of friends interrupts. Katie is no prude, but she knows better than to associate with the older English boys, especially since theyre known troublemakers. Mattie has no such compunction. Thumbing her nose at the Ordnung and all of the Amish rules, she disappears into the old barn with Billy. Moments later, the Zimmermans barn is consumed by fire. Katie suspects Billy had something to do with the blaze, but he denies it. When the facts dont add up, Katie begins her own investigationand she doesnt like what she finds. Will her friendship with Mattie survive the truth?

4.25⭐️

I listened to this quick novella in the Kate Burkholder Series prepping supper. Seeds of Deception takes place when Kate is 14 years old. She has to decide who is telling the truth between her Amish friend, Maggie, or a teenage Englisher. It was a different take on the other books by Linda Castillo. Kathleen McInerrey is a great narrator.

😊 Happy Reading 😊

Another novella in which we are taken back to Chief Kate‘s childhood in Painter‘s Mill. Kate and her friend Maddie suffer discrimination and aggression from some mean English boys. We also get a look at Kate‘s brother Jacob, who is sweet and protective with her.

This is a short Kate Burkholder story (#7.5 in the series). Just around 1:30 in length. Detailing a big event in Kate‘s life around the age of 14. I enjoyed watching Kate interact with her siblings and her best friend. We‘ve met all of them in previous stories. I don‘t really think this one adds anything new to Kate‘s current narrative as police chief in Painter‘s Mill. Still, it‘s fun to see Kate portrayed as a young Amish person.
