Fire is like a rumour. You might think you’ve extinguished it but one creeping, red tendril, one single wisp of smoke is enough to let it leap back into life again. Especially if someone is watching, waiting to fan the flames ... New school. Tick. New town. Tick. New surname. Tick. Social media profiles? Erased. There’s nothing to trace Anna back to her old life. Nothing to link her to the ‘incident’. At least that’s what she thinks … until the whispers start up again. As time begins to run out on her secrets, Anna finds herself irresistibly drawn to the tale of Maggie, a local girl accused of witchcraft centuries earlier. A girl whose story has terrifying parallels to Anna’s own… The compelling YA debut from Laura Bates, founder of the Everyday Sexism Project and bestselling author of Girl Up. PRAISE FOR LAURA BATES: ‘One of the first women to harness the power of social media to fight sexism and misogyny and give millions of young women a voice.' Grazia ‘Mature, eloquent and passionate, Bates is in many ways the voice of her generation.’ Huffington Post PRAISE FOR GIRL UP: ‘A bracing love letter to today's teenage girls’ – Sunday Times 'Essential reading for young women and girls’ – Morning Star Online 'This no-nonsense guide to being a girl in 2016 is one all teen girls should read’ – Red magazine 'If you have a daughter or a niece or a younger sister or a goddaughter, buy it for them now' --The Pool PRAISE FOR EVERYDAY SEXISM: ‘This is an important book’ –Independent ‘A potent reminder of how far feminism has come and how far it has to go’ - Kirkus Reviews 'A game-changing book, a must-read for every woman' –Cosmopolitan 'Funny and clever' - Telegraph

Thanks to #Netgalley I got a chance to read this book. I both started and finished it in a couple hours last night. A tough, emotional read that I hope lots of people read for interesting discussions in the future. This book releases in April.

BRILLIANT!!!! I have rarely read a book that should be read by EVERYONE!!!! It‘s heartbreaking but so so true for millions of young people out there! It touched me in a way that only a few other books have touched parts of me deep inside. If I could give it a million picks I would!

Abailliekaras Sounds amazing! I bought this and plan to give to my goddaughter (aged 14) - do you think ok for that age? 4y
Nikki15 @Abailliekaras Yeah I think so. It‘s probably aimed at that age anyway. I hope she enjoys it as much as I did! 4y
Abailliekaras @Nikki15 thank you! 4y

So my partner has challenged me to read 96 books by the end of this year which is still another 56 😱 but if I do it my reward is a shopping spree at Waterstones!! Well, I better crack onto my next book ASAP 📚

Pruzy Wow, gotta love someone who offers to get you more books for reading books! 4y

A treat to chat with Laura Bates at the Festival of Ideas today. I loved Girl Up and Misogynation. Laura kindly signed The Burning for my god-daughter. ✨

I‘m currently reading The Burning by Laura Bates. I like the issues raised in this book. It‘s about online abuse,m and sexual harassment. Though I feel like the story is a little bit draggy but I want to know the ending. Hope can finished it. Wish me luck!

This is exactly the kind of book that should be read in schools - I thought it was really well executed and loved the parallels between Witch hunting hundreds of years ago and the problems women still face today.

I just knew this book would be worth reading. The author deftly links the misogyny & double standards in both the witchcraft accusations of old, & the present day treatment of girls & women. Recommended but it‘s not an easy read.

TW - revenge porn, bullying/cyber bullying.

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Simon & Schuster UK Children‘s, for the opportunity to review an ARC. #NetGalley
