Body in the Castle Well: A Bruno, Chief of Police Novel
Body in the Castle Well: A Bruno, Chief of Police Novel | Martin Walker
5 posts | 7 read | 7 to read
An aging art scholar and a visiting student, haunting echoes of France's colonialist past, and a delicious navarin of lamb--Bruno is back, and his latest case leads him from the Renaissance to the French Resistance and beyond by way of a corpse at the bottom of a well. When Claudia, a young American, turns up dead in the courtyard of an ancient castle in Bruno's jurisdiction, her death is assumed to be an accident related to opioid use. But her doctor persuades Bruno that things may not be so simple. Thus begins an investigation that leads Bruno to Monsieur de Bourdeille, the scholar with whom the girl had been studying, and then through that man's past. He is a renowned art historian who became extraordinarily wealthy through the sale of paintings that may have been falsely attributed--or so Claudia suggested shortly before her death. In his younger days, Bourdeille had aided the Resistance and been arrested by a Vichy policeman whose own life story also becomes inexorably entangled with the case. Also in the mix is a young falconer who works at the Chteau des Milandes, the former home of fabled jazz singer Josephine Baker. In the end, of course, Bruno will tie all the loose threads together and see that justice is served--along with a generous helping of his signature Prigordian cuisine.

Bruno‘s feasts:his region‘s local
produce,cheeses,meat,&wine that fill it‘s markets,and Bruno‘s table. Mouthwatering!
Bruno investigates the death of a wealthy American heiress. In doing so,he finds himself catapulted into the art world, where allegations of false attribution to paintings acquired during/post WWII linger, creating a pall over a former resistance fighter.A falconer,a singer reminiscent of Josephine Baker add to the mix.

kspenmoll @Suet624 Good eyes! I am- my legs are under there! I cannot complain about cold to you, but it‘s 13 degrees & on a quick descent! 3y
Suet624 @kspenmoll I decided to check the temperature. It's -5 F and expected to go to -12 F. I had no idea it was that cold right now. Anyway... you can always complain to me about the cold. Cold is cold. 3y

#booksandcoffee #mugtour

In 2016 we jumped in our car for a scenic ride to Stockbridge, MA. After a tour of the Norman Rockwell Museum & its grounds, we ate a scrumptious lunch in the outdoor Courtyard of The Red Lion Inn, an Historic Landmark. When perusing through town we discovered the once Back Room restaurant that was memorialized by Arlo Guthrie‘s iconic song, “Alice‘s Restaurant.” That‘s me pictured in front of the building on Alice St.

I just finished this latest edition of the Bruno, Chief of Police series by Martin Walker. I highly recommend them all. Set in the Dordogne region in France, each book is full of interesting people, delicious sounding food and wine, and a bit of history along with mystery. I‘ve come to know and love the residents of the fictional town of St. Denis. I‘ll bet you will, too.
