When Annie Jacobson's brother Mike enlists as a medic in the Army in 1967, he hands her a piece of paper with the address of their long-estranged father. If anything should happen to him in Vietnam, Mike says, Annie must let their father know. In Mike's absence, their father returns to face tragedy at home, adding an extra measure of complication to an already tense time. As they work toward healing and pray fervently for Mike's safety overseas, letter by letter the Jacobsons must find a way to pull together as a family, regardless of past hurts. In the tumult of this time, Annie and her family grapple with the tension of holding both hope and grief in the same hand, even as they learn to turn to the One who binds the wounds of the brokenhearted. Author Susie Finkbeiner invites you into the Jacobson family's home and hearts during a time in which the chaos of the outside world touched their small community in ways they never imagined.

This is a quiet, lovely novel centered around 18 year old Annie as her older brother goes to Vietnam and what her family looks like changes. Full review: https://booknaround.blogspot.com/2020/05/review-all-manner-of-things-by-susie.ht...

I finished the chunkster I was reading and I decided to pick this one up. It may or may not be my last read of the year since I told the high school senior he could have a New Year‘s Eve party here tomorrow night. I expect to get a lot of reading time in since I have to stay awake to chaperone!

This is my first time reading Finkbeiner and I think this's one of the best books I've ever read by a modern author. The characters are so genuine and the real-life struggles were so relatable. The setting of small-town, Vietnam War era America was just entrancing to me. It's an absolutely beautiful literary work. This isn't one to rush through; it's one to savor. One to take your time strolling through its pages. More here: http://pfm.link/BFSP0s

jdsutter @Princess-Kingofkings Any of her other books you'd recommend I read next? 5y
Princess-Kingofkings @jdsutter this was my favorite ~ I usually go back and read an author's most recent book and so on 5y

“We sat at the end of the dock, my father and me. Early morning fog hovered over Chippewa Lake, so thick I couldn‘t see to the other side. As far as I could tell we were the only two awake out of all the people in Fort Colson. It wouldn‘t have surprised me to learn that we were the first up in the whole state of Michigan.“

"With intimacy, a poetic voice, and an ever-present grip on hope, Finkbeiner writes with breathtaking admiration for the common American family in the throes of unbearable circumstances. Beautiful. Honest. Artfully written. A winning novel."--Elizabeth Byler Younts, author of The Solace of Water

These raindrops represent how my glasses look after finishing this book. Fortunately no one caught me crying. That's the blessing of working in the Control Room alone. I'm going to need to ponder what to write in my review but I'll definitely recommend it.

My goal today is to finish reading this book. I'm on page 354 and I'm done with all my paperwork at work so I have 4 hours to kill.

I specifically chose each of these books because I'll get to meet these authors in August at the Fiction Readers Summit. Susie Finkbeiner will be at Baker Book House next week so I'll be standing in line waiting for a hug and her signature on my copy of All Manner of Things. #FictionReadersSummit

This book will fill your heart and touch your soul! as a child born in the '60s my memory of this era playing my mind through rose colored glasses. I have many happy memories and only a bad recollection of the war and news of the war. Not many novels are set during this ara making this an extra special book! More in comments...

TheHeartlandBookFairy This book is sat in a small Michigan town near lake Michigan. Having grown up in and still living in one of those smallish near lake Michigan towns, this book is extra special to me ☺️ I was brought back to the '60s through the mention of songs, TV shows, foods, sayings and phrases that were popular, styles described in the book and more, how fun! But this book is so much more than "fun"! Cont... 6y
TheHeartlandBookFairy this is an important story to read. It is also, at times, it difficult story to read. I kept thinking about all those who served in this war, all their families. I kept imagining that this fictional story was indeed a reality for so many! This is an important story to read. It is a story of great joy, great courage, great hope, great faith, and ultimately the happiness that comes from knowing and living in that faith ♥️ 6y
Princess-Kingofkings Hope to see you at Baker Book House on the 30th for Susie's book signing. 6y
TheHeartlandBookFairy @Princess-Kingofkings , Oh how I wish I could! I won't be out of work in time to get there 😢 6y
Princess-Kingofkings @TheHeartlandBookFairy oh how sad ~ I was overjoyed to get my schedule yesterday and see that I was working the midnight shift the day before but have this night off. I'm glad you have already been able to read it though. 6y
