Reasons to Be Cheerful
Reasons to Be Cheerful | Nina Stibbe
6 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
The new novel from the beloved, critically acclaimed author of Love, Nina, Man at the Helm, and Paradise Lodge. 18 year old Lizzie Vogel, determined to make a grown-up life for herself, lands a job in a local dentist's office after answering a classified ad for a "mature lady with a strong interest in dental issues' "Working for an eccentric dental surgeon, Lizzie's life is, for once, uneventful, until Andy Nicolello turns up one day to deliver a crown. Lizzie seizes her chance to find love, and soon begins calling him her boyfriend even though they have never so much as kissed or even sat next to each other on the sofa. But Andy doesn't turn out to be quite what he seems... Reasons to be Cheerful is a painfully funny account of life as a hapless teenager from the bestselling author of Love, Nina, Man at the Helm and Paradise Lodge.

I DNF'd one #BacklistReadathon book this month because it was gross (Valiant by Holly Black) and came very close to doing it to this too, because it features the worlds most revolting dentist. (Racist too, but at least he gets some comeuppance for that.) I wound up liking it okay, but I don't think I would've missed out on much if I had DNF'd it. (cont.)

willaful There are some good laughs and more likeable oddball characters than the dentist, but much of the eccentricity was more anxiety-provoking than fun, like the narrator's maybe weird love triangle with her maybe-boyfriend and her own mother. And the story took an unexpected and kind of horrible turn. (Possibly because it's semi-autobiographical? In fiction it felt melodramatic.)

If you enjoy Stibbe, you might like this, but IMO it's not her best.

willaful LOL! I'd forgotten until just now that both books share a gross aspect, though we never do know what actually happened between the boyfriend and mom in this one. 10mo

Pickpick

This was a good story but I must admit it wasnt as funny or good as I'd hoped. The story flowed well and the ending was really good but it just didn't pull me in enough. There were some good moments and some very sad ones that made up for other parts of the story. I liked Lizzie a lot but she was the only one I truly liked in the story. A good read but not a favourite for me.
