Valiant
Valiant | Holly Black
When 17-year-old Valerie Russell runs away to New York City, she's trying to escape a life that has utterly betrayed her. Sporting a new identity, she takes up with a gang of squatters who live in the city's labyrinthine subway system. But there's something eerily beguiling about Val's new friends. Impulsive Lolli talks of monsters in the subway tunnels they call home and shoots up a shimmery amber-coloured powder that makes the shadows around her dance. Severe Luis claims he can make deals with creatures that no one else can see. And then there's Luis's brother, Dave, who makes the mistake of letting Val tag along as he makes a delivery to a woman who turns out to have goat hooves instead of feet. When a bewildered Val allows Lolli to talk her into tracking down the hidden lair of the creature for whom Luis and Dave have been working, Val finds herself bound into service by a troll named Ravus. He is as hideous as he is honourable, and as Val grows to know him, she finds herself torn between affection for him - and fear of what her new friends are becoming because of him.

I wouldn't say I got lost in the faerie tale like usual...maybe it was the drug use or the mother who was sleeping with her daughter's boyfriend. I didn't get into it until the very end. It was an acceptable story. Is that bad?? Lol

Still working on my #bookspin but got this one done. Not as good as tithe but I liked that it was dark and gritty. One off the board for #bookspinbingo

I was initially disappointed that this wasn't a continuation of Kaye's story, but Val won me over quickly and I loved this just as much. A LOT of drug use though.

Chrissyreadit Could you tell me more about the tbr jar? 5y

Took a walk after work today with the tagged book. Got to sit and read for a bit, enjoying the autumn sunshine. 📚💕☀️ I love the way yellow leaves look once they fall from trees. So pretty! 🍁🍂

Finally got ahold of Valiant! I never read this as a teen because I was so irritated that the sequel to Tithe didn‘t include Roiben and Kaye but after The Wicked King, I figured I might as well get some more Faerie in before Queen of Nothing! I‘m not crazy about the narrator, honestly. I would have preferred Kate Rudd. Renée Raudman makes everybody sound like children. I do like the book so far though! ? #libby #hollyblack #faerie

booksandsympathy The third book in the series is about Roiben and Kaye. I just finished tithe and am skipping this one to go to the third one. I'll come back to this one later. 4y
blithebuoyant @booksandsympathy that‘s exactly how I did it! Ironside is SO worth skipping Valiant. Valiant is good but it‘s no Ironside. Definitely recommend coming back to Valiant. 4y
booksandsympathy @blithebuoyant I am planning on coming back to Valiant, but I prefer to finish out the story of Kaye and Roiben first. 4y

This book was different and interesting; kind of gritty for a teenage fantasy novel. There were some good, unexpected plot twists and my favorite character, Ravus. His roll was unconventional for a troll.

Pretty good. Kind of different from her other books. But Holly Black always writes good books!

It‘s a cute enough story, and I love the writing. But as a huge fan of the first book, I was so hoping for more of Kaye and Roiben! I will take troll in the subway though ❤️ worth the read, and love the tie in to the original story as well.

I enjoyed this book, but slightly less than book 1. I had a few issues with the book, mainly the use of magic as a drug and how a character mentioned running away at 13 to live with at 22 year old boyfriend but it wasn't seen as a bad thing besides him treating her like a child. But I enjoyed the expansion of the world and excited to see how Book 3 brings the first 2 together.

blithebuoyant I was super bothered by that too. 6y

Even darker than Tithe, this story goes further down the rabbit hole and leaves you jonesing for the next Modern Fairytale. Valiant follows a new heroine, and explores magic as a drug with love as the cure. I'm totally in love with Ravus and hungry for the next story!

Librarygal08 Love this book one of my favs 8y
