The Future of Ice
The Future of Ice: A Journey Into Cold | Gretel Ehrlich
5 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
This book was written out of Gretel Ehrlichs love for winterfor remote and cold places, for the ways winter frees our imagination and invigorates our feet, mind, and souland also out of the fear that our democracy of gratification has irreparably altered the climate. Over the course of a year, Ehrlich experiences firsthand the myriad expressions of cold, giving us marvelous histories of wind, water, snow, and ice, of ocean currents and weather cycles. From Tierra del Fuego in the south to Spitsbergen, east of Greenland, at the very top of the world, she explores how our very consciousness is animated and enlivened by the archaic rhythms and erupting oscillations of weather. We share Ehrlichs experience of the thrills of cold, but also her questions: What will happen to us if we are deseasoned? If winter ends, will we survive? From the Trade Paperback edition.

Well, it‘s not the most upbeat winter book, but it is an important one because what will winter look like if it ends because of climate change?

Pickpick

I adored this book but it was a neverending slog. If you love luminous nonfiction I recommend The Solace of Open Spaces, also by Gretel. Truth be told Solace was captivating and Ice was slow motion misery. Hugely poetic! I love poetry! This book, however, was poetry as wakeful nightmare, all damp skin and big eyes. I can only be truthful. You might race through this book. If so, I recommend gin.

Yes, I finished my #Bookspin. Took me all month.

Happy Opening Day!

In other news, I‘m nearly done with my #Bookspin. It‘s been a bit of a slog. It‘s a beautiful book, but it‘s a bite-sized book of vignettes, which makes it slow going. I love reading (and writing) poetry, and Ice is very poetic, but for various reasons reading it has been like walking in molasses.

Good morning, #Mittenlittens!

My husband gets up early with Murray. His report: “-8. -16. Whatever. It‘s just effin‘ cold.”

Librariana Oh, that looks absolutely FRIGID! 🥶 Hope y'all are staying bundled up... are safe and warm indoors! 3y
wanderinglynn 😳🥶 that‘s brutal! Stay warm! 3y
MittenGirlPeach @Librariana @wanderinglynn it warmed up to 20 eventually, but I did indeed stay indoors! Mark took Murray the sheepdog snowshoeing though, which they both loved. I think (hope) we‘re past the worst of the truly cold winter weather. 🤞 (edited) 3y

The tagged book is my choice for #Booked2021 prompt 2 (science written by a woman). It‘s been in my library for years, and I even started it once, but got distracted by another book and didn‘t pick it up again until now. She‘s a wonderful writer though; I loved “The Solace of Open Spaces.”

A lovely sunrise! I just went out barefoot on the porch to take the pic. It‘s MILD out. 31F!

Cinfhen Yay!! Beautiful photo 💜Enjoy the book 3y
