Amelia Westlake Was Never Here
Amelia Westlake Was Never Here | Erin Gough
7 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
A fiercely funny, queer romantic comedy about two girls who can't stand each other, but join forces in a grand feminist plan to expose harassment and inequality at their elite private school. Harriet Price is the perfect student: smart, dutiful, over-achieving. Will Everhart is a troublemaker who's never met an injustice she didn't fight. When their swim coach's inappropriate behavior is swept under the rug, the unlikely duo reluctantly team up to expose his misdeeds, pulling provocative pranks and creating the instantly legendary Amelia Westlake--an imaginary student who helps right the many wrongs of their privileged institution. But as tensions burn throughout their school--who is Amelia Westlake?--and between Harriet and Will, how long can they keep their secret? How far will they go to make a difference? And when will they realize they're falling for each other? Award-winning author Erin Gough's Amelia Westlake Was Never Here is a funny, smart, and all-too-timely story of girls fighting back against power and privilege--and finding love while they're at it.

Oh gosh, just steamed through this tale of a activist student and a goodie two shoes who accidentally team up to draw attention to some issues in the school and maybe, oops, fall in love on the process.

I listened to this whole YA queer romance today while I was packing boxes in the kids‘ rooms (the big move is next week!).

It was super cute, and I love how the girls smashed the patriarchy at their posh private school (and how racism was called out as well).

Plus Australian accents on audio! 😍 #pridemonth #queerfiction

CarolynM I loved this one🙂 Glad you enjoyed it too. 2y

Romantic comedies aren‘t my usual fare, yet I thoroughly enjoyed this Australian YA novel set in an exclusive high school in Sydney. An unlikely pair of lesbian teens use pranks to battle sexual harassment, homophobia and racism at their school, under the guise of a fabricated student. Alternating voices in the storyline are read by two #audiobook narrators. Uplifting #LGBTQ #YA #OzAuthor

CarolynM I loved this one too. It was so sweet and funny. 3y

Lindy @CarolynM I kept putting off reading this on account of the American cover (the hot pink one). I find the Australian cover (with the school hats seen from above) more appealing: 3y
Lindy @batsy The pranks have a more varied social conscience in Amelia Westlake, which I appreciated. 3y
CarolynM Yes, the Australian cover is cute, this one is a bit too much. Hope it doesn't put everyone off. 3y

Thanks to @littlebrownyoungreaders for this free ARC! Oh Amelia... Will and Harriet are two students attending a rich private school in Australia. Will clearly sees the wrongs of the way school admin handles things and Harriet is a to-the-T rule follower. Will‘s sarcastic ways enable her to get Harriet to see that maybe there are a few things at school that are not ok, like the Olympic swim coach harassing the all-female student body.
