Pickpick

Editor Roxanne Gay‘s choices are interesting—lots of coming-of-age stories. Faves: Maria Anderson‘s “Cougar” for loss, landscape, animals as symbols, Great Pyrenees, quiet but effective language; Matthew Lyons‘ “The Brothers Bruno” for energy of language, brutality & sacrifice, ritual magic / Santeria, allegory of excesses of capitalism; Emma Cline‘s “Los Angeles” for consumer culture, identity, sexuality, turns of phrase, amazing sentences. 2018

Terrible collection.

hermyknee I haven‘t read this one, but I did love her memoir Hunger - what is your biggest complaint with this collection? 6y
keithmalek @hermyknee The selected stories, with only one or two exceptions, were boring. There's nothing worse than a boring collection, since there's a variety of different voices. But some editors just have poor taste. 6y

Pickpick

Gay selects whip smart stories. A good read to start the year! A bonus is that her picks are more diverse than some editors. “Boys Go to Jupiter” is a thought-provoking look at young adult racism in the Insta/Twitter age; it‘s especially good.

BookishMarginalia I need to track this down. 6y
SomedayAlmost I often like The Pushcart Prize anthology better, but this year I really liked the stories in this one. Smaller journals were represented, not just “The New Yorker.” 6y

I knew that Roxane Gay would be great as the editor of this year‘s Best American Short Stories, and she didn‘t let me down. The stories here represent voices from diverse backgrounds but maintain a common theme of family dynamics and generational and cultural expectations. My favorites were “Good With Boys” and “A Big Truth.”

RJHowe Short stories are a great form. Will definately be picking this one up. 6y
