Fountain of St. James Court: Or, Portrait of the Artist as an Old Woman
Fountain of St. James Court: Or, Portrait of the Artist as an Old Woman | Sena Jeter Naslund
6 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
"Is it a crime to live? To create happiness for yourself through your own work?"How do writers and painters get their ideas? And what are the hard realities of such seemingly glamorous and romantic lives? In her groundbreaking new novel, New York Times bestselling author Sena Jeter Naslund explores the transformative power of art, history, and love in the lives of creative women. It's midnight on St. James Court, at the heart of which is a beautiful fountain sculpture of Venus rising from the sea. Kathryn Callaghan has just finished the first draft of her novel about renowned painter Elisabeth Vigee-Le Brun, a survivor of the French Revolution who was hated for her sympathetic portraits of Marie Antoinette. Although the manuscript is complete, its author remains haunted by Elisabeth's experiences, which are revealed in Sena Jeter Naslund's ingenious novel-within-a-novel interleaved with the chronicle of a day in the life of Kathryn Callaghan. Despite being separated by time, place, and culture, Kathryn and Elisabeth possess similar gifts and burdens: uncompromising aesthetic codes, fierce pride in their artistic expression, and unwavering love and sacrifice for their children. And before the next midnight rolls around, Kathryn will have confronted personal danger as frightening as the butchery that Elisabeth faced during the Reign of Terror. Each woman will be called upon and tested; each will, like Venus, rise triumphantly above the expectations of her world. In this, her compelling and intimate ninth book, Sena Jeter Naslund presents the reader with an eye-opening alternate vision of The Artist: not an angry young man but a woman of age and hard-won experience who has created for herself, against enormous odds, a fulfilling life of thoroughly realized achievement.

There is so much about this book that is just excellent, until you get to the last 20 pages or so. I was disappointed in the ending, which surprised me. The book within the book, the fictional memoir of a real artist, Elisabeth Vigee LeBrun, was interesting and moving. The outer story was very evocative, with interesting characters and thoughtful tropes on aging. But still trying to puzzle out how it could have felt so unfinished.

ValerieAndBooks Glad you liked it for the most part...too bad about the last 20 pages though. I wonder if I'll have the same impression when I read it someday! 7y

#riotgrams #outside I posted a picture the other day from my favorite reading chair on our patio. From my chair, you can see the firespike, but I thought I'd post a closeup of what brings the most color to my outdoor reading space right now. I need to wait a couple months until the frangipani blooms. Then I'll be reading outside all the time.

mom2bugnbee Lovely! Please post a picture later so we can see it in all of its glory! 7y
8little_paws This urban Litten is so jealous of the great outdoor spaces I see in my feed here on a regular basis! 7y
Josie @8little_paws RIGHT? I don't even have a backyard! This is gorgeous! 7y

So hubby caught me with my book and my bourbon 😊. We took a walk early this afternoon, but I've been in my cozy chair the last couple of hours. And I brought out my black velour pj's which means it's really special occasion. #Litsypartyofone

emilyhaldi Bourbon definitely amplifies the party aspect! 🎉🥃 7y

It's a perfect day in South Florida, I had coffee with a friend, helped hubby wash the car, and now it's time to start partying at #Litsypartyofone. Who says you can't party before lunch?

#currentread I started this today, one of the books I received from my Secret Santa, @ValerieAndBooks The writing is absolutely beautiful. I hadn't realized that it is a book within a book, but it's quite easy to distinguish them, as one is first-person and one is third-person. The contemporary character is near my age and there have been several musings about aging, which are interesting but not entirely comfortable.

ValerieAndBooks Can't wait to hear what you think! I didn't realize it was structured that way. I may have to read it too 😊. Did I tell you I got a copy of Twain's End for myself recently? 7y
Lynnsoprano @ValerieAndBooks I'm really enjoying it! And we will have to set a time to buddy read Twain's End. I've never done that. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Lynnsoprano how about sometime in March? I'll let you decide 😊 7y

Thought-provoking read. Enjoyed the story within the story, told back and forth between the present day life of the author and excerpts of the book the author has written about the artist. The visual descriptions have inspired me to someday seek out St. James Court fountain.
