My Teacher Is a Monster! (No, I Am Not.)
My Teacher Is a Monster! (No, I Am Not.) | Peter Brown
11 posts | 13 read | 2 to read
Bestselling and Caldecott Honor artist Peter Brown takes a universal and timeless theme, and adds his own humorous spin to create another winner of a picture book. Includes Read Aloud/Read to Me features where available. A young boy named Bobby has the worst teacher. She's loud, she yells, and if you throw paper airplanes, she won't allow you to enjoy recess. She is a monster! Luckily, Bobby can go to his favorite spot in the park on weekends to play. Until one day... he finds his teacher there! Over the course of one day, Bobby learns that monsters are not always what they seem. Each page is filled with "monstrous" details that will have kids reading the story again and again.

“But was Ms. Kirby still a monster? ROBERT! The End”.

My favorite part is how the teacher was a green monster at the beginning of the book but by the end she was illustrated as a human being.

This book is perfect for younger children. It is also funny. It shows how a boy saw his teacher outside of class and he saw her as a normal kind human being and he no longer saw her as a monster that always stomped the hallways and yelled at students! I think kids would really enjoy this book.

My Teacher Is a Monster! (No, I Am Not.), by Peter Brown, is a wonderful MF story for the classroom. It is about how a student sees their teacher as a monster, but slowly starts to see them differently when he runs into her outside of school. This video would be a nice contribution for the story to be RA. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m74FqMU7qBs

jmartucci I would use ESOL strategy 10, to think, pair and share strategies to help them discuss the book. I would use UDL 2.1 to clarify vocabulary and symbols for the students. A fun activity for them might be to make paper airplanes like in the book. #ucflae3414su19 5y
LibrarianRyan I love this book. 5y
MeganKlein @jmartucci, I‘ve been wanting to read this book ever since I read the Q&A article about Peter Brown! Looking forward to reading this text and possibly owning it in my own classroom library one day! 5y
Mary_Dehner Nice post! I like how you included a YouTube video for reference. 👍🏼 can‘t wait to check this book out in the future. 5y

This realistic fiction tells a story of a boy name Bobby and how he thinks she a monster because of the way he treats her. However, when he sees her at his favorite spot at a park he considers her to be pretty nice and cool. UDL Strategy 1.1 and ESOL Strategies 10, 13, and 22. Teaching Strategies RA and S. #UCFLAE3414SP18

BriannaR This is a link from Peter Brown's website. It offers many activities to use within the classroom that go well with story http://www.peterbrownstudio.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/TeacherMons... (edited) 7y

My Teacher is a Monster!, a modern fantasy(F) picture book, is a great and funny book for a classroom library. It is all about a boy named Bobby who believes his teacher is a monster because she doesn‘t let him goof around in class. Throughout the book he realizes she is not actually a monster, just a teacher trying to help him do well in school. I would use this as a read aloud(RA) followed by the lesson plan.

morganhillman http://www.peterbrownstudio.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/TeacherMons.... The UDL principle 6.4, enhance capacity for monitoring progress, is met by any of the amazing lesson plans in the link! The EL principle 26, integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities, is also met through all of the lesson plans in the link. The children have a variety of activities, such as questioning, 7y

JordanL This was a book I was interested in reading. I'm going to have to check this out, thank you for your review! 7y
paulettevp Hello, Morgan. I love books like this because it‘s ultimately what truly happens. Students don‘t always understand the purpose of the rules until much later in life. How would you apply this book into a hands-on activity? (edited) 7y
morganhillman @paulettevp I would apply this book to a hands on activity by using one of the fun activities in the link provided above! There is a really fun one where the kids get to make paper airplanes that I think most kids would love! 7y
paulettevp @morganhillman Thank you. I agree with you. They would love that! They already want to make paper airplanes on the daily to play. 7y

5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Peter Brown is fast becoming one of my favorite picture book producers. He has written some of my favorites like “You Will be my Friend” and “Children make terrible pets”. For our boy Robert, Mrs. Kirby is a monster. She roars, she stomps, etc. Until the day they see each other in someplace new. The illustrations are wonderful and so is the story line.

My Teacher is a Monster is a PB written and illustrated by Peter Brown. Even though this story includes illustrations of a monster I believe it is RF because the illustration of the monster is just a metaphor. I would use this book for S. The book is about a kid who thinks his teacher is a monster until one day he interacts with her in public and realizes that teachers are just people too.

jasminep This link http://www.peterbrownstudio.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/TeacherMons... takes you to a pdf with discussion questions, group activities, and other activities for students. I would use UDL 7.2 which is optimize relevance, value, and authenticity because this story is already super relevant and relatable. 7y
jasminep I would use ESOL strategy 46 which is Use discovery learning activities (hands-on-activities) because there are a lot of hands on activities that the link I provided discusses.
