The Polar Express | Chris Van Allsburg

Pickpick

The Polar Express, a great Fantasy book, Caldecott Award, TS's include RA, S, IR, GR&PR. The book emphasizes the belief in Santa, and begins with boy who listened for the sound of Santa's bells, but rather heard the sound of a train. The conductor told the boy this was the Polar Express, and would take them to the North Pole. This book has the best artwork from a book, which really captured the trip to the North Pole, and of the North Pole itself.

JordanL https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/polar-express-... A great Lesson Plan, that incorporates technology to create a Podcast. UDL 5.2 will work great with this lesson plan as they will need to utilize tools to create a Podcast. ESOL strategy 34 will be helpful as the Podcast is the students retelling the story, which won't be perfect for lower proficiencies. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
ambera I honestly had no idea The Polar Express was based on a book. I've only seen the movie but now I'm excited to add the book to my collection! 6y

A fantasy book, by the famous Dr. Seuss, TS's include RA, S, AS, IR and GR. This is my favorite Christmas book as it has a shows a greater meaning than just presents. The story is about the Grinch who hates Christmas, and devises a plan to ruin Christmas for all the Who's in Who-ville. The book would be excellent during the holidays, or during Read Across America.

JordanL http://www.seussville.com/Educators/educatorLessonPlans.php & https://www.brighthubeducation.com/lesson-plans-grades-1-2/65967-how-the-grinch-.... The first resource is great for all Seuss books, while the second link is specifically for The Grinch and has a great lesson plan to go with the book. 6y
JordanL UDL 1.3 and 1.2 can be accomplished as there is a great short film that can go with the movie that brings to life those characters within the book. ESOL strategy 22 would be excellent for the lesson plan provided, as there are questions to go along with the lesson plan. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
ambera This is a great book to read to young children around the holidays! It would be cute to make it a book and movie day! Have them come in pajamas and provide hot chocolate for them to drink during the movie. It would be a nice way to relax after a busy semester. 6y

A fun Animal Fantasy book, TS's include S, AS, RT, GR and CR. The book goes through the day of Pete's adventure of figuring out who keeps stealing the cupcakes for the cupcake party. With clues of who keeps stealing the cupcakes, Pete will eventually discover the culprit behind this. This story is great for younger children, and has some counting elements to it.

JordanL https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/henrys-freedom... Scholastic provides great resource for a variety of lessons, with sequencing, match, etc. UDL strategy 3.3 would benefit greatly as the students will see the clues and allowing them to build inferences. ESOL strategy 7 would also allow ELL's to map out the events for the story. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

This is a Historical Fiction of the true story of Henry Brown, and his story of his early childhood in slavery, Caldecott award, TS's include RA, LC, IR, SR, and GR. This story hits on all the points of slavery that children will have a reaction to, and really shows the emotions that these people went through. This story does an excellent job showcasing the horrors of slavery. I highly recommend this book!

JordanL https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/henrys-freedom... A great lesson plan provided by scholastic, and will allow students to make connections to their lives and of the story. It also provides all the worksheets you'll need within it. 6y
JordanL ESOL 36 and 31, depending on proficiency, can have the teacher ask leveled questions to see what the students were able to take from the story to answer the questions in the lesson plan. UDL 7.1 will also be beneficial as the children should be filling in their TCharts individualized to themselves, and based off what they know and learned. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
JenniferMc I love the idea of this book! To think it is a true story! I can‘t wait to add this to my classroom library. 6y
AmeliaS21 I want to read this book! I‘ve seen so many good reviews about it! 6y
DrSpalding If it‘s true would it be fiction? This is an excellent book and you selected another high-quality resource in using the publisher‘s site Scholastic. 6y

A relaxing Realistic Tale, Caldecott award, TS's include RA, S, SR, GR and CR, is about a girl who is convinced she is not sleepy. The parents smoothly ease the girl into where, where she'll inevitably go-to bed. The artwork is very interesting and gravitating as each character has their own crown which is symbolic to the status within the household. This book also explores a bit into animals sleeping that can cooperate with a science lesson plan.

JordanL http://school.sleepeducation.com/howdoanimalssleep.aspx This could be a fun activity to go with the book about how each animal sleeps differently. This can be incorporated with a larger science lesson plan about animal habits and how they sleep within their habitats. 6y
JordanL ESOL 46 will go with the lesson plan as it delves deeper into the habits of other animals and their sleep cycles, which also includes a video to provide visual assistance. UDL 3.1 can be used to delve deeper into understanding animal sleeping habits, like the video in the activity listed and other resources with information about animal habits. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

A fun Realistic Fiction, TS's include LC, S, IR, SR and PR. A story about a boy, S.A.M., who has a wild "adventure" while going shopping for shoes and his journey home with K. This boy has a wild imagination, but excellent artwork, especially with the pages a dark blue and light blue really has excellent contrast. The writing for S.A.M.'s imagination does make him feel like a secret agent.

JordanL https://www.pinterest.com/pin/5136987052401083/ A plot diagram would fit fairly well with this book, and this book can be used as an example to showcase different plot points and events with a story. This will go well with ESOL 9 as this would be an excellent way to incorporate time lines with the lesson, as the events to go throughout the day. Using UDL 8.3 to allow students to work together to make a plot diagram, can also be beneficial for ELL. 6y
JordanL This book is an excellent way to showcase a flow through a story and how there can be multiple plot points. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

This book is great for Halloween, and feels like a poem with excellent flow almost songlike, TS's include RA, S, RT, GR, and CR. I would read this to younger children with it being read nice and slow. With excellent pictures, bringing the scarecrow to life just like in the story. This book is very fun for children, with normally haunting things in Halloween being fun while they are enjoying their one night of the year.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/collaborating-cla... This lesson goes well with the book as a wrap up, or to just to incorporate reading with the lesson. http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/acrostic-poems-ab... This lesson can also be used with the book, as the book being used as a reference for the children. 6y
JordanL ESOL strategy 14 would work well, as I feel that this story can be read slower to a younger class, which can be beneficial for a younger ESOL or beginning proficiency student. UDL 7.2 would be perfect especially if this was read on Halloween, it would heighten the relevance, and the relevance of the 2nd lesson plan provided. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

A great story for Halloween, a Historical Fiction, TS's include RA, S, IR, GR, and PR .Set in the 1700's where a man, John Leep, was going evict a widow from one of his rental houses. While on his horse to evict that Widow, a strange presence is felt following him to his destination. This story has a great meaning of morality and greed behind it, and is a great read aloud book for Halloween.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/thrills-chills-us... A lesson plan that can be slightly modified for this book, is a great way to analyze the book for it's elements and meaning. Giving an atmosphere on Halloween with UDL 1.3 and 1.2 can give students an immersive experience. ESOL 13 can help the students understand what the meanings were behind the story, and can allow for great comprehension. 6y

A Historical Fiction, Caldecott award, TS's include IR, SR, GR, CR and PR; the book uses art work from the authors art work and quilts. This is a great story that includes African-American folk of "flying" for freedom, and is told in a way that really shows the viewpoint of a little girl in a world with not equal opportunities, and can be very relatable for some girls, and can also allow for some students to better understand that time period.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/family-message-jo... This is a lesson plan made specifically for this book and another book, "The people could fly". A UDL strategy would be 3.2, just because the symbolism of "Flying" may be different than what a child thinks, even though it's explained at the end of the book. ESOL strategy 1 would allow students to ask and get clarity on some of the books topics. 6y

An early reader Realistic Fiction book, Caldecott award, TS's include PR, RA, RT, GR and CR. A simple book about 2 different people meet, where it shows a shy kid meeting a more outgoing person on the street. Very quickly, it's noticeable they have had different life experiences and came from different backgrounds. The books simple wording relays a nice message to coincide with the books images.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/family-message-jo... This lesson plan is about the student learning about a topic, and having a student use their backgrounds to make an observation/opinion on the book can allow a student to their classmates a bit better. This book did a great job on showing 2 different people coming together for friendship, and each student will have different viewpoints on this. 6y
JordanL ESOL 2 would be nice to allow not only the ELL communicate their ideas, but also understand there will always be another viewpoint of the same text, and this textbook is great to showcase this. Also, UDL strategy 7.2 to allow students to understand that this book can be relevant to their everyday life, and can help them gain a better understanding of those interactions. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
DrSpalding Consistently thoughtful UDL/EL strategies applied. Your use of high-quality websites is noted. 6y

This Nonfiction book, TS's include IR, SR, GR, PR & LC; would be useful in some classroom activities, and also informative for some children who are super interested in certain animals. This book has a load of information that can easily be incorporated into a lesson, and goes into a variety of animals that can camouflage into their environment. A very simple and easy read, for younger children especially.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/investigating-ani... This lesson works with not only this book, but other Nonfiction animal books as it allows students to research and animal of their choice, which this book can be a valuable resource for camouflages and why they need it (hunting or hiding) 6y
JordanL UDL 1.3 would be nice, and can go with a video to showcase and elaborate on camouflages and why they are used. Usage of ESOL strategy 45 can be used for comparing the reasons why animals use those camouflages and have a visual resource to refer to. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

This is my favorite book of the last decade and a great realistic fiction, Coretta Scott King Award, TS's include IR, LC, AS, GR, and SR. It's incredibly designed, and has a very unique writing style that comes from the point of view, Josh, and his journey through school dramas. He and his twin brother, Jordan, are a dynamic duo with basketball, but the story goes deeper than that with great family values and a terrific morale behind the story.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/boys-read-conside... This would be a great lesson plan to go with the Crossover if you have a child struggling with reading, the lesson plan discusses about boys relating to a strong protagonist, and I thought it could help out young boys who may be struggling to "captivate their interest". 6y
JordanL ESOL strategy 30 is necessary to help students understand the series of events, along with different relationships and interactions between each character. Also, UDL 9.3 would be effective as it can allow students to reflect about the ending, as I feel some children will have different viewpoints on why Josh played that basketball game. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

A SF book, Newbery winner, TS's include LC, AS, IR, RA and PR. Brother and sister Charles Wallace and Meg have been without their Physicist Father for a while that has taken a toll on the family, whom vanished. They meet a friend, Calvin, when going to investigate Ms. Whatsit's cabin. Ms. Whatsit's and the two other woman, Ms. Who and Which, take them to a distant spiral nebula, where they learn of a Darkness that slowly engulfs the universe.

JordanL This book has a lot of points that can be added such as Camazotz and how IT is a darkness that can control the minds of others. This is a fantasy book, which can get quite confusing, so usage of a T-Chart may help greatly http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/printouts/chart-30225.html. This book, in my opinion, is more for older Elementary grades, the book jumps around a lot to me without much explanation, especially with the 3 W's. 6y
JordanL A UDL necessary for this book has to be 2.3, which goes with the T chart just to help students decode and follow the book easier to avoid confusion. A good ESOL strategy would be 29, reference materials like Read Alongs, video explanations, or other visual aids. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

One of my favorite books growing up, Modern Fantasy, was a NYT Bestseller, TS's include IR, RA, LC, AS and PR. With no spoilers, this book did a great job capturing my imagination on turning Clay Dragons to life with something called the Fire. This book began with a normal college boy becoming a Tennant for Elizabeth and younger daughter, Lucy, and made a Clay Dragon, Gadzooks. This dragon ends up coming to life and written so it could be reality.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/genre-study-colla... Since this is a fun book to read, I feel that this would be a great way to have students explore the Genre, and have fun being able to identify its characteristics. 6y
JordanL I would read this book aloud as it may be fun to capture some of the moments in the book. Using Time Lines so students understand the events, which goes with ESOL 9. Also, having UDL 3.2 for understanding, that ways students can understand or get clarification on relationships between certain characters, and potentially use this as a cause and effect for the later parts of this book. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

A Historic Fiction, Newbery winner, TS's include LC, AS, IR, PR &RA. It captures life for 3 young African American children visiting their mother in Oakland. We get the perspective of the oldest of the 3 sisters (Delphine), whom is 11, and her conflicts with her biological mother, Cecile, or her pen name, Nzila. We find out pretty quickly she's a member of the Black Panther movement, and she is fairly harsh to her three children that will open up.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/guided-comprehens... This lesson fits great with this book, primarily because it allows the children to make personal connections with the book itself and, hopefully, better comprehension. Using ESOL #6 to monitor their comprehension would be used here, and that would simply come from the connections made. 6y
JordanL I feel that a read aloud would work great, so usage of UDL 5.1 should work and do the trick. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
KhyaraN Also another UDL strategy would be 8.3 that fosters collaboration and community due to the themes of diversity in the story 6y

A Historical Fiction novel, this adventure would be great read within a LC, RA, AS, IR and PR. This book is about an orphan boy, Nate, who's dad died at sea. He was taken in by his uncle, Storch, who is a slave owner, and runs away after an accident with the slave boy, Theo, where Nate took the blame. He fled and became a camp helper, after he met his father friend. Nate lived through the battle of Brooklyn, and returned home after Storch died.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/looking-history-h... Throughout the story, especially towards the end, you hear a lot about Smallpox and is how the uncle died, which goes great with this Lesson Plan. This Lesson plan talks a lot about illnesses, which is a bit creative rather than talking about this historical aspect of The American Revolution. 6y
JordanL For a UDL, this talks heavily about history, so using 3.1 to supply students with background knowledge can help understanding of the events in the book. Also, #5 for ESOL can help students, as there are vocabulary words an ESOL student may not know, so providing translated vocabulary can help comprehension. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
Cruzdia1 I agree that #5 would be a great ESOL enhancement because you could also utilize visual aids to help EL students visualize a new vocabulary word! 6y

Quickly in his imagined world, it turns into a fight with the snow monster, but eventually, prevails on saving his friend from the monster and a bunny.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/genre-study-colla... This book is a little more difficult to understand if it's a Fiction or Non-fiction, so having the students study differences can help in the future. 6y
JordanL Using a UDL 3.3, for information processing, because students need to understand that the world the story takes place is in a fictional planet inside Niko's imagination. An incredibly designed book, with such unique art style, is a great Fantasy read with your students and deserved to be a Caldecott Honor, TS's include RA, S, AS, RT, DR. Jasper Rabbit loves carrots and feels that he is being haunted by carrots from the best carrot crop around, but little does Jasper know, it's all apart of the carrots plan. This book would be great for a Dramatic Reenactment with how sentences are structured in a dramatic fashion.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/once-upon-time-re... With a little teacher editing, this would be a nice way to allow students to brainstorm and come up with their own ideas about what a fantasy is, along with creating their own Story Maps. This goes well with 8.3, Fostering collaboration and community, as both the UDL and the Lesson Plan promotes community responses and work. 6y
JordanL Since there is a story board element to the lesson plan, having ELL's do #30, encouraging use of diagrams and drawings, it should aide well when the time comes to make a story board, and help understanding of that is occurring in the story. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

A Biography about the great Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King winner, TS's include RA, LC, IR, SR, and PR. The book did a great job on showing his early life, and all of the work he did for Civil Rights. It also had some of his quotes throughout the book, showing his compassion and to "fight with words, not fists". This again would be great for a Read Aloud. This book was a Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King award.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/martin-words-thin... A Fable, Caldecott winner, TS's include RA, LC, S, GR, and PR. This book has a little girl who is almost like a horse whisperer, where during a thunderstorm gets taken on a wild ride with horses to meet the great Spotted Stallion. That is where the story takes off, and you don't know what she'll consider her true home, either with her new friend the Spotted Stallion, or her family.

JordanL For a UDL Design, I would definitely add 9.3, "Develop self-assessment and reflection", as the students might be confused as why she chose to be with the horses over her family, and what they would do if they were in her shoes. 6y
JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/guided-comprehens... It uses different books as recommendations, but with some editing, much of the same concepts are there. This lesson plan is great for ELL's as well since there is a Small Group Activity. ELL's can also get Word Banks to help them understand the words, though there weren't too many complex words in this story. 6y
DrSpalding Error in the first section of the post. Proud of you for working out the genre. Fable is correct! The stories work beautifully and social studies units regarding Native American folklore and culture. Your resource is of excellent quality, as you know. Great start Jordan. 6y
