Shakespeare's Trollop
Shakespeare's Trollop | Charlaine Harris
10 posts | 29 read | 5 to read
Welcome back to Shakespeare - a charming Arkansas town with endless back roads, an eclectic mix of residents, and a dollop of noir. Featuring cleaning woman/karate expert Lily Bard, Charlaine Harris's series puts a unique spin on the traditional cozy to create mysteries that "work on every level. The writing and plotting are first rate [and] Lily is appealing in her own prickly way" --Washington Times In this installment, Lily discovers lifelong Shakespeare resident Deedra Dean murdered inside a car parked in a woodsy area outside town. Determined not to get involved, Lily wants to leave the police work to Sheriff Marta Schuster and her team of deputies, and concentrate on cleaning, high kicks, and her boyfriend Jack's impending visit. But when Deedra's notoriously promiscuous lifestyle provides an extensive list of suspects but very few clues, Lily has no choice but to resume the roll of amateur detective and join the investigation. In Shakespeare's Trollop, the fourth book in Charlaine Harris's highly acclaimed and darkly compelling series, Lily Bard delivers a hard-hitting mix of Southern charm and street smarts, a combination so alluring that long-time readers and newcomers will be dying to visit Shakespeare again.

I took Tae Kwon Do in college. Lily Bard is a student of To-Shin Do ninjutsu. I don‘t know why I think this is important to tell you, I just do. This is another excellent book in the Lily Bard mystery series. Who is murdered and why are both shocking. And whodunnit is a surprise. I‘m about to start the fifth and final book in this series. I‘m also going a little bonkers that cell phones were new and videocassettes were common not that long ago.

TiredLibrarian I loved the Lily Bard series; wish Charlaine Harris had written more of them. 10mo
CatLass007 @TiredLibrarian A friend of mine said he got tired of the Aurora Teagarden mysteries. I know I got tired of the Sookie Stackhouse series. So maybe it‘s not necessarily a bad thing that she stopped at five books with Lily Bard. Have you read the Midnight, TX series? I liste to the first book and realized that characters from the Harper Connelly series (which I had already finished) and folks from Shakespeare, AR appeared in that series. (cont)⬇️ (edited) 10mo
CatLass007 I decided to go back and listen to the Lily Bard series and maybe the Aurora Teagarden series before moving to Midnight, TX. 10mo
TiredLibrarian @CatLass007 You have a good point about ending a series on a high note, instead of wearing out your welcome. I'll have to look into the Midnight, TX series! 10mo
CatLass007 @TiredLibrarian I hope you enjoy the Midnight, Texas trilogy. The first book was excellent. 10mo

Idk who Mary Alice is but I'm shocked she gave these books away. I will NEVER get rid of my autographed books. This one makes 5.

After a slightly disappointing third book this one is back to the standard of the first two.

Lily is a little a less likeable in this book than she has been previously but it‘s a solid interesting murder mystery.

CatLass007 @Marialou I just started listening to this today and I scrolled through a few of the most recent comments. I was wondering why you felt like Lily was less likable in this book. What I‘m seeing is that after being all closed off for the last several years, she‘s allowing herself to be more emotionally vulnerable and she‘s frightened by what that means. She‘s translating her fear into anger. Vulnerability is scary. 10mo
CatLass007 I‘ll keep listening to find out how she resolves things. 10mo

Just can't get a solid read on Lily Bard. I know she has secrets from her townsfolk, but it feels like the reader is missing important details to feel for her. I'm enjoying the mysteries... But she's just not am engaging main character. #26-2022

So yeah, I forgot that Bobo Winthrop was in Shakespeare, AR before he went to Midnight, Texas. In these books he's barely out of his teens. The glimpse of him younger is fascinating. And of course I like the Lily Bard storylines, too.

I needed to order something via interlibrary loan, to help test a new interface. I didn't remember reading this one, so this was it. I'm enjoying it - and enjoying being back in Lily's world. I hadn't remembered about Bobo Winthrop (from the Midnight, Texas series) being introduced in this series. I *did* remember that Manfred showed up in the Harper Connelly series.

I figured out the who this time, but not the why. The murder in this one is closer to home and Lily continues to improve as she works to solve the mystery.

I thought a quote from Lily Bard--housecleaner, turned reluctant detective, would be fun. Although I am a fan of the Sookie Stackhouse/Tru Blood series (at least the first 8 books or so), the Lily Bard/Shakespeare series and the Harper Connelly Mysteries series are probably my two favorites from Charlaine Harris.

Start with 'Shakespeare's Landlord' if you haven't read them.

CoffeeNBooks I loved the Lily Bard series! 6y
rwmg I loved the Lily Bard books, though I must admit Lily's back story shook me - very grim for what I thought was going to be a cozy bit of fluff 6y
Pamwurtzler I always wished there were more Harper Conally books. 6y
Bookzombie @Pamwurtzler Me too! I love that series. @DebinHawaii I need to try the Lily Bard series. 6y

My evening entertainment as my niece was in this tonight. I'm not sure the bard would approve but I was highly entertained.
