The Reluctant Cannibals
The Reluctant Cannibals | Ian Flitcroft
15 posts | 4 read | 13 to read
A darkly humorous exploration of how a complete devotion to food can have unforeseen and shocking consequences When a group of food-obsessed academics at Oxford University form a secret dining society, they happily devote themselves to investigating exotic and forgotten culinary treasures, until a dish is suggested that takes them all by surprise. Professor Arthur Plantagenet has been told he has a serious heart problem and decides that his death should not be in vain. He sets out his bizarre plan in a will, that on his death, tests the loyalty of his closest friends, the remaining members of this exclusive dining society. A dead Japanese diplomat, police arrests, and charges of grave robbingare just some of the challenges these culinary explorers must overcome in tackling gastronomys ultimate taboo: cannibalism.

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

1) is easy, I've always wanted to learn skydiving/parachute jumping.

2) tagged - it's Oxford colleges and the characters are dons, but that's school as well, right?

Book_Lover95 I‘ve always wanted to learn American Sign Language! I will always recommend Harry Potter 5mo
TheSpineView Wow, skydiving! Great ambition! 5mo
julesG @TheSpineView I'll probably never do it, though. 😁 5mo
julesG @Book_Lover95 Go for it. I know a few signs in ASL only - enough to not starve, but can't sign my name. 5mo

Mehso-so

I am glad it's over. As much as I liked the eccentric Oxford dons in this story, it was a very looooooooong story. With sometimes boring secondary and tertiary stories.
About halfway into the book I would have bailed, but I wanted to know whether the gastronomic society would eat human flesh or not.

Shorter story and better editing would have made this a pick.

3/5 stars

After this morning's events (kids to school, to the GP, shopping groceries), Sherlock and I have about 5 more minutes before I have to play with the cat. She's already sniffing for her favourite toy.

AmyG Your cat tatoo...❤️ 6y
Kelly That tattoo is so cool. 😻 6y

Joanne1 Perhaps not the most tranquil book though? The cat does look very comfy though. 6y

julesG @Joanne1 It's relatively tranquil. So far there was only academic talk about cannibalism and a lot of reluctance. 😉 6y

Pickpick

Gallows humor, academia, and food, not all of it (or even most of it) human flesh. See my full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2018/01/review-reluctant-cannibals-by-ian.html

@tournevis, another lovely sentence. There should be a comma after "if he had", shouldn't it?

This made me stutter. Is there any other form of kneeling? Can you kneel on any other part of your body?

PS: tell me when I'm starting to annoy you

britt_brooke Ha! Good point. 6y
tournevis I'd been marking papers until yesterday and you would not believe how often those kind of things show up in their writing. I have a macro for "Your style is redundant and repetitive", followed by an explanation of the difference (because they don't know). 6y
tournevis You are not annoying 6y

2BR02B Haha. "Kneel" even has the word "knee" in it. An editor should probably have picked this up. 6y
rockpools 🙄 6y
julesG @2BR02B The operative word is "should" -- It occurred towards the middle of the book. In my experience this is when the 'I couldn't be bothered to edit' part starts, which last until the last chapter/ten pages (whichever comes first). 6y

tournevis Who was the editor, that I find them and kick them hard!? 6y
julesG @tournevis 😁😁 Naaa! Don't kick them. It's well-edited in most parts. We all know that editing slacks around the middle until shortly before hitting the 95% hurdle. 6y

tournevis @julesG I'm demanding of editors. 😏 6y
tournevis @julesG Noted... 😜 6y
julesG @tournevis I'm also demanding. Just haven't found the courage to actually go kick butts yet. 😉 6y
tournevis @julesG I've been known to ask very pointed questions in letters. 6y
BookNAround See now I took this as his academic gown being pulled on over his goofy jammies so this line didn‘t bother me at all. 6y
julesG @BookNAround That's how I read it too. 6y
julesG @BookNAround I think there's a comma missing in the next sentence, though. Or is that just my German love of commas? 6y
BookNAround I actually think the following sentence is okay. I am slightly bothered by him pulling the gown on slowly but then having no time to lose, implying the need to hurry. Technically okay, if I was editing it, I‘d flag that as a problem. 6y
julesG @BookNAround let's just say, there are a few lines within the book that could have done with some extra TLC/editing. 6y

#ScenesFromABook @JoeStalksBeck

Today: #InTheKitchen
Okay, not precisely in the kitchen itself in this scene.

The things that happen in the kitchen, especially concerning the meetings of the culinary society, are too good to spoil the fun here. 😝

I suggested this one for book club and before I could finish the title, the head shaking and “no,” and “nope(s)” were in full swing. I think they‘re a little wary of me now. 😂 So instead, and in keeping with my newish tradition of starting the year with a strange/uncomfortable read, I‘m going to crack this open on my own. Hope it‘s good!

CindyMyLifeIsLit Looks awesome! Added. Thanks! 6y
julesG It's been on my TBR for ages. I think I'm going to crack this open, too. The next #LMPBC book can wait a little longer. 6y
TricksyTails I would TOTALLY read it with you! Too bad I'm not in your book club. My "yes" would've been loud enough to drown out all the "nope"! Sounds fun to me. ? 6y

julesG @TricksyTails I've just started chapter 18. This book is good. The subtle dark humour ... 6y
BookNAround @julesG it made me snort many a time. It‘s pretty witty for sure. 6y
julesG I wonder what took me so long to read this. 6y
TricksyTails @julesG Ooh need to read this now! Dark twisty humour is my fave! Adding to the TBR! 6y
