Sherri Smith illuminates the dark side of the self-care and wellness industry in a thrilling ride of revenge perfect for fans of Liane Moriartys Nine Perfect Strangers. The Retreat is a twisting, bone-chilling suspense that asks: how well do you really know your friends? Four women. Four secrets. A weekend that will change them forever...if they survive. Katie Manning was a beloved child star until her mid-teens when her manager attacked and permanently scarred her face, effectively ending her career and sending her on a path of all-too-familiar post-Hollywood self-destruction. Now twenty-seven, Katie wants a better answer to those clickbait Where Are They Now? articles that float around online. An answer she hopes to find when her brothers too-good-to-be-true fiance invites her to a wellness retreat upstate. Together with Katies two best friendsone struggling with crippling debt and family obligations, one running away from a failed job and relationshipKatie will try to find the inner peace promised at the tranquil retreat. But finding oneself just might drudge up more memories than Katie is prepared to deal with. Each woman has come to the retreat for different reasons. Each has her secrets to hide. And at the end of this weekend, only one will be left standing.

Mehso-so

Meh...it was entertaining, but I figured out who the “culprit” was pretty early on.

Pickpick

Slightly inappropriate at times yet enjoyable and addictive nonetheless. This book will keep you guessing till the end, and will send shivers up your spine throughout. Some of the side plots I don‘t think were finished off properly, but I presume it was how the author saw fit. All in all it was a solid read!

It got me out of my book slump but as psychological suspense stories go, it wasn't very taut. Some well done wit but the murderer was very easy to peg terribly early on & the reveal didn't make up for that.

You know from page 1 someone at the retreat is a psychotic murderer and all of the POVs reveal questionable moral character/sanity. Some of the other guests/owners at the retreat are equally sketchy; plenty of unsavory possibilities. The reveal was fairly shocking and well done but the end fell very very flat. Also, this was an arc from NetGalley with a huge number of errors. At one point part of the story seemed to be missing. Overall😐

To quote Charles Schulz, “happiness is”....a new ARC from NetGalley, beautiful weather to read outside, a glass of Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc in a bug-proof insulated cup, my buddy Elvis by my side, and wearing my fav Litographs TS Eliot T-shirt. #lifeisgood #petsoflitsy #catsoflitsy #elvis #netgalley #wineandbooks

Zelma I don‘t know if this could be more perfect. 👍 5y

Pickpick

A masterful mystery, full of intrigue and red herrings which kept my mind buzzing with possible perpetrators throughout. All of the characters had major flaws which indicated they could have been the murderer depicted at the beginning of the book and I constantly swayed from one to the other as I endeavored to “soooolve the case” before it was revealed who-done-it! My only criticism is that the ending felt rushed but it didn‘t affect my enjoyment.
