Dancing at the Edge of the World: Thoughts on Words, Women, Places | Ursula K. Le Guin

Oof the past week+ has been busy/stressful. Sick cat (he's ok now), stepsister's baby shower, work stress, dance exam prep, and roadworkers broke a water main near my house so we had no water for part of a day. Does make me realize the things I take for granted, so I'm grateful for that, but I've barely read anything. Really looking forward to this long weekend. Hopefully I'll make a dent in this giant pile I'm (in theory) currently reading!

This is LeGuin specifically talking about The Left Hand of Darkness, but if you describe your writing as a thought experiment I have to think that way of approaching fiction influences all your writing, not just one specific experiment.

@batsy this is what your comment on #Earthseachapteraday the other day made me think of. And yes, I highly recommend LeGuin's nonfiction. I've only read a fraction of it myself but it has all been so interesting.

batsy Thanks for sharing this! It's interesting to think about. Considering the first two Earthsea books, although the characterisation felt incomplete in some way, the books have left an impact on me. Days later I'm remembering scenes and moments and what they brought up in terms of the questions raised in the books. The thoughtfulness she brings to her work lingers with you... 6y

I am looking for critical writing on Fantasy novels I've just been on a bit of a search and come up with this series of essays by Ursula K Le Guin but anything you guys have read on reading/writing fantasy fiction would be absolutely brilliant! Thanks Littens!!! 💙💚In case your curious these books are for my Masters degree I'm hoping to one day lecture about fantasy writing 😊 💙🐍🐍🐍

BookishFeminist I'd entirely forgotten about this book until I was doing some research last night, but this is a collection of essays by Nalo Hopkinson, a Caribbean fantasy, sci fi & folklore writer- she's phenomenal if you haven't read her. She talks about her writing some in here & might be good for you to look at!
