Reflections | Diana Wynne Jones
18 posts | 15 read | 20 to read
Diana Wynne Jones is best-known for her novels and stories - of magical fantasy - written mainly for children. She received a World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2007, as well as two Mythopoeic Awards and the Guardian Fiction Award for Charmed Life. But she was also a witty, entertaining speaker, a popular guest at science fiction and fantasy conventions and an engaged, scholarly critic of writing that interested her. This collection of more than twenty-five papers, chosen by Diana herself, includes fascinating literary criticism (such as a study of narrative structure in The Lord of the Rings and a ringing endorsement of the value of learning Anglo Saxon) alongside autobiographical anecdotes about reading tours (including an account of her famous travel jinx), revelations about the origins of her books, and thoughts in general about the life of an author and the value of writing. The longest autobiographical piece, 'Something About the Author', details Diana's extraordinary childhood and is illustrated with family photographs. Reflections is essential reading for anyone interested in Diana's works, fantasy or creative writing. The collection features a foreword by Neil Gaiman and an introduction and interview by Charlie Butler, a respected expert on fantasy writing.

Confession: it‘s not until I posted that last picture of the library book I‘ve been working on all week, that I noticed how familiar its UK cover looked in other Littens‘ photos. Because, as it turns out, I already owned a copy of this book. 🤦‍♀️

Now I‘m just hoping I still have the drive to finish it without a library due date breathing down my neck...

Centique 😂😂 I know the feeling. I have made a list on my phone of all the unread books I own because I found myself blithely buying more editions of the same thing at second hand book shops! 2mo
ravenlee I always visit the same used book shop when I visit my in-laws. One year I bought The Pickwick Papers, because I thought it was time to read it. Got hone from the trip a few days later and put the book on the shelf...next to the identical copy I had bought a year or two prior...from the same store...same edition and everything. 🤦🏻‍♀️ At least my thinking is consistent. 2mo
Reggie I bought the Milkman on kindle because there was a sale. And then 2 weeks later I cleaned out my car only to realize I had bought it at B&Ns like a month earlier. Lol, it happens. 2mo
emtobiasz @Centique @ravenlee @Reggie you all are making me feel better! At least my duplicate was a library book! 2mo

I‘ve been working my way through Reflections a few essays at a time this week, revelling in DWJ‘s writing about her writing. Imagine my delight, then, when I found The Ogre Downstairs in a Little Free Library on our walk this morning! #bookserendipity #lfl #tbr #thanksuniverse

Libraries are awesome. So is this book. If you are a writer, give this one a read. Jones left a legacy in the books she wrote and some of her processes are detailed in the essays in this volume. I'm a little over a third in and cannot recommend it enough.

Reflections, by Diana Wynne Jones, should definitely be added to your to-read list if you're a fan of her novels; the book talks a lot about what inspired them, and includes stories for Jones' childhood. It also has some great tips for writers of all categories and genres. #WhatToRead #NonFiction #Writers

Despite having only read a few of her works, I really enjoyed the Reflections, and have also jotted down several titles to look for!

This gem arrived in today's mail! I found Neil Gaiman's introduction to this book, which is included in his audio book The View from the Cheap Seats, so compelling that I ordered this book immediately! Looking forward to digging in!

catsuit_mango I just added it to my stack for exactly the same reason 3y
Louise @catsuit_mango Wow! I wonder if NG knows how powerful his reading of that intro is! He bringing a whole new audience to this book! 🤓✨ 3y

Diana Wynne Jones knows stuff, y'all.

BkClubCare Yep. ('Course I know that cuz Jenny speaks truth.) Are the Gin and Whiskey girls on Litsy? 3y
xicanti @BkClubCare I haven't seen 'em around, but I'm such a dabbler myself that I might have missed them. 3y
