This is an awesome book! I loved how Miss Tillie used her garden to teach the little girl about her hair. I have a Japanese Maple that I bought as a twig. I could totally relate to how you have to care and nurture it to help it grow because my tree is huge and beautiful now. That‘s what she taught her about hair!

I loved this book because it incorporates diversity and a different perspective. For a future classroom I would want books that apply to all my students so I would love to have this one!

Having books in your library that are diverse and interesting for all groups of students is so important. This is a biography about the hair of black people. It talks about how it is beautiful regardless of the fact that it is different. Children see different and think wrong. This is an important book because it shows that different is beautiful too.

I saw this book on Litsy, Hoopla had it so I grabbed it. This children‘s book is going to be very popular I think as we talk about hair issues and hair drama more openly, more people will have the skills and understanding to successfully help & advocate. Being in a small town where good product or knowledgable beauticians were not always the norm, & with recent battles about acceptable hair for military personnel, it is a timely topic. (Cont ⤵️)

Riveted_Reader_Melissa (Cont.) It‘s the story of a young woman trying to deal with her unruly natural hair. There is good solid advice about how to care for natural hair without over drying and breaking it along with a great story about treating the hair that you grow as lovingly and patiently as you would a garden, with care and the right tools. Plus a few recipes. 5y
Tamra Nice! I will check it out for my daughter and I to enjoy. 👧🏾 5y

#RedRoseSeptember Day 17: #KinkyAfro reminded me of this picturebook that shows how to care for one‘s hair done in so sensitive and so thoughtful a fashion that one wonders why this has not been done before. It highlights very clear issues that young people like Mack in the story clearly encounters and very specific ways of dealing with it, in a clear-sighted, no-nonsense fashion.
