Seduction and Betrayal
Seduction and Betrayal: Women and Literature | Elizabeth Hardwick
3 posts | 2 read | 28 to read
The novelist and essayist Elizabeth Hardwick is one of contemporary Americas most brilliant writers, and Seduction and Betrayal, in which she considers the careers of women writers as well as the larger question of the presence of women in literature, is her most passionate and concentrated work of criticism. A gallery of unforgettable portraitsof Virginia Woolf and Zelda Fitzgerald, Dorothy Wordsworth and Jane Carlyleas well as a provocative reading of such works as Wuthering Heights, Hedda Gabler, and the poems of Sylvia Plath, Seduction and Betrayal is a virtuoso performance, a major writers reckoning with the relations between men and women, women and writing, writing and life.

Some NYRB books I've read and loved. Three of them compelling and unforgettable translated fiction: Zama (Spanish), Crocodile (Chinese), Murderess (Greek). And one gem of a book of literary essays, mainly on women writers, by Elizabeth Hardwick.

LeahBergen And I don‘t have ANY of these. Oh oh. 😆 5y

batsy @readordierachel Lucid and very intelligent; not everything I agree with, but such a pleasure to read and think with her ❤️ 5y
vivastory I have Notes on a Crocodile & I think I also have Zama. Haven't read either one, but will be moving them up after your high praise for them. Honestly, all 4 of these sound terrific! 5y
batsy @vivastory They're all books I still think about. Inventive and strange and the kind to get under your skin. Hope you enjoy when you get to them! 5y

A sublime and sharp collection of essays on women writers and female characters in fiction. Some of her views I might quibble with (a little too hard on women writers sometimes, and too easy on male writers) but she's intelligent and erudite and her writing is elegant. If you love reading about literature there's so much to think about here. #booksaboutbooks #ReadingWomenMonth @thereadingwomen

RealLifeReading Sounds good! 7y

My #WWW this week is Elizabeth Hardwick (1916-2007). It's also her birthday! She's best known for her insightful & sharp literary criticism, but she also wrote essays & fiction. She co-founded The New York Review of Books bc she had a distaste for current book reviews. My fave of her works is Seduction & Betrayal which is acutely perceptive about the lives of literary women, their writings, & the presence of women in literature. 🙌🏼 #ReadWomen

RebL Cheap? I'm a library power user and still spend an embarrassing sum at the bookstore. 8y
BookishFeminist @RebL well, it can be! I also spend an embarrassing amount at the bookstore & the library on fines 😳 8y
RebL Still cheaper than many hobbies/sources of entertainment and waaaay more satisfying. 8y
BookishFeminist @RebL so true! Even if I'm paying library fines I would rather it go to support the library than lots of other things I could be doing with my money 8y
