A haunting, mysterious tale imbued with the force of myth, by the award-winning author of A Kind of Intimacy. When Annette Clifford returns to her childhood home on the edge of Morecambe Bay, she despairs: the long-empty house is crumbling, undermined by two voracious sycamores. What she doesn't realise is that she's not alone: her arrival has woken the spirits of her parents, who anxiously watch over her, longing to make amends. Because as the past comes back to Jack and Netty, they begin to see the summer of 1963 clearly, when Netty was desperately ill and a stranger moved in. Charismatic, mercurial Timothy Richardson, with his seemingly miraculous powers of healing, who drew all their attention away from Annette... Now, they must try to draw another stranger towards her, one who can rescue her. Blurring the boundaries between the corporeal and spirit worlds and subtly echoing the myth of Baucis and Philemon, this is an eerily beautiful, evocative and highly original novel, which underlines the eternal potency of hope.

I definitely know I've raved about this book and posted about it in challenges before but trailing through my GR list i saw some books that would apply but the writing in this was so good I'm popping it up again.
The opening chapter is the ghosts of the owners of a house in Morecambe coming back to their home and they are a constant presence as their troubled dtr returns to the derelict property and the history is retold.

This was one of my books of 2016 based on the myth of Baucis and Philemon, (an old couple who allow a god into their home). I was chuffed to see the author with Andrew Hurley discussing the mystery of the north west coastal region in fiction - a brilliant read evoking the atmosphere vividly

Just started this audio book. Simon Savidge mentioned it on The Readers ages ago and I couldn't find it here in the US. Finally the audio book is available!

I had a hard time getting through Solar Bones, although the writing and sentiment was lovely. Now I'm behind my reading goal because I'm having trouble getting into this one as well. Am I in a reading slump? 😔

I was aware of the novel already, but Twitter put this short review from an Irish newspaper in front of me just now and I think it ties with a review by @batsy of another book for the two best book reviews I think I've ever read in my life! Just gorgeous prose in this review!

batsy Ack! You're too kind Shawn 💜 This is a lovely review and I hadn't heard of this book before, sounds like wonderful gothic melancholy. 7y
TrishB This is a great book 💜 I loved it. I've read all her others too. I follow her on fb and she's very funny and interesting. I'm a bit of a fan!! 7y
andrew61 I also loved this book. I was lucky to see her discuss it last year with Andrew Hurley the author of The Loney, she is a really interesting speaker and the discussion based on place was really good . You have a treat in store Shawn. 7y

Pickpick

Fell is undoubtedly very very good, but also tremendously bittersweet. It reminded me very early on of Bernice Reubens' books like Five Year Sentence and I found it very hard to get past that. It is a story of small magics & ghosts but not at all in the way you'd expect.

ephemeragrrl #LitsyAtoZ @BookishMarginalia must update the other 4.... 7y

It was a delicious honour to read early drafts of this gem written by my dazzling friend, Jenn. Next up on my TBR pile is the finished product, generating much buzz. FELL is a sorrowful, magical, and tender hearted book set in England's northwest. The Guardian has recently described it as, "Dark, compelling, beautifully written, Fell adds another powerful story to the mythology of our strange hinterlands." Shivery, haunting, and long-lingering.

Last night I had the joy of hosting Jenn Ashworth and we discussed her incredible fourth novel Fell. A tender, emotional novel about hauntings both of the living and the dead. She's a star in so many ways. You should all read this book.

Merethebookgal Very cool! 8y
