Refund: Stories | Karen E. Bender
5 posts | 9 read | 9 to read
We think about it every day, sometimes every hour: Money. Who has it. Who doesnt. How you get it. How you dont. Bender uses this very powerful force to pull together a unified collection of stories that deeply explore the ways in which money and the subsequent estimation of value affect the lives of her characters. The stories in Refund reflect our contemporary worldswindlers, reality show creators, desperate artists, siblings, parents who struggle to figure out how to obtain money, how to give it, earn it, lose it, all the while trying to answer the question: What is the real definition of worth? In Theft, an eighty-year-old swindler, accustomed to tricking people for their money, discovers she has Alzheimers and boards a cruise ship to see if she can find something of true valuea human connection. In Anything for Money, the creator of a popular reality show is thrown into the real world when his estranged granddaughter reenters his life in need of a new heart; in The Sea Turtle Hospital, a young teacher and her charge survive

Ugh. Go figure. @chelreads The book I was shipping you direct has apparently sold out or something (so much for pre-orders 😡) so I'm going to look for something else and just send it all to you in your package. Hopefully I'll still be able to ship this by the end of next week or so 😑

Pickpick

Here's a collection of #shortstories I loved. Full of poignant prose that convey hard truths about love, marriage, parenthood, loneliness and other deeply human experiences. Think the pensive wisdom of Olive Kitteridge combined with the quirky subversiveness of Miranda July. Don‘t read it if you want a light, happy read. But if you find yourself drawn to dark, damaged characters navigating situations both mundane and extraordinary, you'll love it.

Just had a late-night finish of The Wonder Garden. Review tomorrow. Maybe going to start this one tonight, but if not, definitely tomorrow. (What's the weekend for if not to stay up reading? Right?) Thanks @mauveandrosysky for the recommendation! 🤗👊🏻
