David Foster Wallace: The Last Interview
David Foster Wallace: The Last Interview: and Other Conversations | David Foster Wallace
5 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
In intimate and eloquent interviews, including the last he gave before his suicide, the writer hailed by A.O. Scott ofThe New York Timesas the best mind of his generation considers the state of modern America, entertainment and discipline, adulthood, literature, and his own inimitable writing style. In addition to Wallaces last interview, the volume features a conversation with Dave Eggers, a revealing Q&A with the magazine of his alma mater Amherst, his famousSaloninterview with Laura Miller following the publication of Infinite Jest, and more. These conversations showcase and illuminate the traits for which Wallace remains so beloved: his incomparable humility and enormous erudition, his wit, sensitivity, and humanity. As he eloquently describes his writing process and motivations, displays his curiosity by time and again turning the tables on hisinterviewers, and delivers thoughtful, idiosyncratic views on literature, politics, entertainment and discipline, and the state of modern America, a fuller picture of this remarkable mind is revealed.

The job of good fiction is to comfort the disturbed and to disturb the comfortable.

"If it looks chaotic, good, but everything that's in there is in there on purpose." - DFW on Infinite Jest [SALON, 1996]

This small collection of interviews grants a glimpse into David Foster Wallace's writing, opinions, and personality. I look forward to diving into his short stories and essays once I'm finished with IJ.

I'm sad he's gone.

LeahBergen This quote! I am SO reading his other stuff when we are done. ❤️ 8y
britt_brooke @LeahBergen Consider the Lobster is waiting on my shelf and it's really hard not to just go ahead and crack it open, but I'm guessing one DFW at a time is a better plan. 😊💚 8y
DocBrown They filmed some of The End of the Tour in my town in Michigan. A buddy of mine ended up in the picture as an extra. 8y

For our #infinitejestbuddyread crew - this is from a collection of DFW interviews I just started reading. I like his answer regarding all the sponsorship and product placement in IJ. Makes sense to me.

bio_chem06 @britt_brooke I just made a note for my buddy read about why he does this. I assumed it had something to do with advertisement and materialism. I'm glad to know it wasn't lost on me, unlike the rest of the book. Haha 8y
britt_brooke @bio_chem06 I totally went back and stalked your page. 😉 How far in are you guys? 8y
bio_chem06 @britt_brooke only around pg 60. I wanted to do more than 3 pages a day, but I found that it was difficult, so we agreed to do 100 pages a month and then discuss. I kind of hate the book. There are pages that just go on & I want to scream, but I just tell myself, it's only 3 pages, you got this! Haha 8y

britt_brooke @bio_chem06 It's such a dense read. Our group is in the 600s now and I kind of love it, but I don't know if I could've gotten through the first 200 pages without them. It starts making more sense around that point, but before that, it's pretty confusing. (edited) 8y
LeahBergen This is so EXACTLY what's going on in IJ, isn't it? I'm becoming more and more of a DFW fangirl as we read! 😍 8y
britt_brooke @LeahBergen Me, too! 😍 8y
Tcip This whole conversation between you guys makes me super happy. :) 8y
Spiderfelt The texture of our world, indeed. 8y

britt_brooke @Spiderfelt Exactly. It's kind of depressing, but so accurate. 8y
