Pickpick

Samantha Allen seems like a delight. In this travel memoir, she visits cities like Provo, Utah and Jackson, Mississippi to find vibrant queer communities in places where people might not think that exists. The book made me want to visit Jackson on particular, although I suspect it might not be as great without her infectious enthusiasm.

effani I do think that if the book is intended to convince people in "blue states" not to write off the "red states," the "real America" framing and remarks about her dislike of major cities doesn't really help that cause. It made me wonder a little bit who the target audience is for this book. But it's still an entertaining read. 3y

Happy I picked this up at an audible sale!

Transgender woman Samantha takes a road trip through several “red states”. She traces both her personal lineage from Provo, UT to Bloomington, IN where she met her wife to ATL where she transitioned. But along these points and others, including TX, AR, MS, & TN, she meets the LGBT people on the ground who stayed to do the work of defending LGBT rights & continuing to expand acceptance of queer ppl. 4.5⭐️
