Prophet's Prey
Prophet's Prey: My Seven-Year Investigation into Warren Jeffs and the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints | Sam Brower
6 posts | 18 read | 22 to read
From the private investigator who cracked open the case that led to the conviction of Warren Jeffs, the maniacal prophet of the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), comes the page-turning, horrifying story of how a rogue sect used sex, money, and power disguised under a faade of religion to further criminal activities and a madman's vision. In Prophet's Prey, Brower implicates Jeffs in his own words, bringing to light the contents of Jeffs's personal priesthood journal, discovered in a hidden underground vault, and revealing to readers the shocking inside world of FLDS members whose trust he earned and who showed him the staggering truth of their lives.

I am a cult fanatic and the last few years I have become obsessed with Warren Jeffs and the Short Creek FLDS community. This book has been on my radar for so long and it was well worth the wait

Sam Brower's investigation is so eye opening to the abuse and sheer mind control that went on here. At one point he compares Jeffs to Jim Jones and I never thought of it, but it couldn't have been far off.

A bit repetitive at times but well worth reading

Another FLDS book, albeit slightly more objective but no less shocking or devasting in its portrayal of the fundamentalist Mormon group. It was a very difficult read, revealing the extent of the systemic child abuse and rape perpetrated by certain individuals within the group under the guise of the religion. Equally as devastating was the apparent apathy with which the relevant authorities handled the cult. A worthy, but heartbreaking, read.

ravenlee Years ago, when it first came out, I read Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven and found it fascinating. I tried to reread it recently and it upset me too much as the mother of a young girl. I just couldn't do it. (Un)fortunately there is no dearth of FLDS stories to choose from these days. 7y
lyradora @ravenlee: agreed. Krakauer's book is good, but difficult. I was very angry when I finished it. 7y
ShookBelf @ravenlee That was the first book I read that started my obsession with the FLDS (only back in February of this year). And yes, I've unearthed so many other books since. 7y

Horrifying glimpse into Jeff's FLDS cult. Cults have always fascinated me, growing up in the Waco, TX area, hello, David Koresh, and another religious group near by. My husband actually grew up in a religious cult and tho they were not FLDS or LDS, or polygamists, there are so many parallels. Control, arranged marriage, lies, abuse and so much more. I had the audio playing until my hub left the room saying he couldn't listen. It's well done.

8little_paws You might want to check this out as well 7y
Foragingfantasy @8little_paws it's in my tbr! 7y
britt_brooke Once you‘re finished with this, I highly recommend watching the documentary of the same name. It‘s follows the book then is updated toward the end. It‘s done by the author in conjunction with Jon Krakauer (who wrote Under the Banner of Heaven; the first FLDS book I ever read). 7y

Foragingfantasy @britt_brooke I'll look it up! Thanks 7y
swishandflick I'm with @britt_brooke on watching the doc! I'd also recommend this as a next audiobook (not FLDS specifically but still that cult mentality): (edited) 7y
britt_brooke @swishandflick I also second The Road to Jonestown on audio! 😁👍🏻 7y

Hallelujah, this creep - Warren Jeffs - has been in jail since 2011. Hope he stays there a good, long while. 😬 #Hallelujah #JuneTunz

These are all worthy reads. Tagging below.👇🏻

Cinfhen I read Stolen Innocence, so sad & I've almost purchased Witness in Red several times...I need to read all these books you posted...so fascinating but really heartbreaking 💔 7y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen It's fascinating and frightening. The documentary Prophet's Prey (based on the book but with updated info) is also noteworthy, but it's a tough watch. 7y
Cinfhen When I'm feeling brave enough @britt_brooke I'll give it a watch ~ thanks! 7y
saguarosally I've read them all. Going to Colorado City later this year. 7y
britt_brooke @saguarosally Oh really?! That'll be interesting! 7y

Today's #bookandmovie feature is the Showtime docu Prophet's Prey by Amy Berg. This haunting, harrowing look at a real life American Gilead will burrow into your brain. It's based on a book, and the author appears as a key figure. If you liked Under The Banner, this is almost like a sequel (and Krakauer is a major figure in both), but fair warning, this documentary is very triggering wrt abuse and religious cults. Recommended, but with warning.

britt_brooke I'm so fascinating by the FLDS, particularly Warren Jeffs and the Short Creek community. The audio tape played during the documentary was truly disturbing. 8y

#recommendsday [part 2]: This goes hand in hand with Under the Banner of Heaven (my original post). It's an in-depth look at the FLDS and their prophet and pedophile, Warren Jeffs. Brower and Krakauer also take part in a documentary of the same name, and it will BLOW YOUR MIND.

TheNextBook I just saw this documentary and I need this book. Under the Banned of Heaven is the first book I read by Krakauer and it was absolutely amazing and extremely disturbing. I need to pick this one up. 8y
britt_brooke @TheNextBook This one is not as well-written as Krakauer's but the information is excellent. 👍🏻 8y
