"Like Melville, Faulkner, and McCarthy, Vann is already one of the great ones of American literature."ABC(Spain) Vanns prose is as pure as a gulp of water from an Alaskan stream.Financial Times David Vanns dazzling debut Legend of a Suicide was reviewed in over a 150 major global publications, won 11 prizes worldwide, was on 40 best books of the year lists, and established its author as a literary master. Since then, Vann has delivered an exceptional body of work, receiving, among others, best foreign novel in France and Spain (Frances Prix Medicis Etranger, Spains Premi Llibreter), a California Book Award, and the mid-career St. Francis College Literary Prize. Aquarium, his implosive new book and first to be published by Grove, will take Vann to a wider audience than ever before. Twelve year old Caitlin lives alone with her mothera docker at the local container portin subsidized housing next to an airport in Seattle. Each day, while she waits to be picked up after school, Caitlin visits the local aquarium to study the fish. Gazing at the creatures within the watery depths, Caitlin accesses a shimmering universe beyond her own. When she befriends an old man at the tanks one day, who seems as enamored of the fish as she, Caitlin cracks open a dark family secret and propels her once-blissful relationship with her mother toward a precipice of terrifying consequence. In crystalline, chiseled yet graceful prose, Aquarium takes us into the heart of a brave young girl whose longing for love and capacity for forgiveness transforms the damaged people around her. Relentless and heartbreaking, primal and redemptive, Aquarium is a transporting story from one of the best American writers of our time.

This book is about a little girl who hangs out at her local aquarium. It‘s about her relationships and feelings and I loved it.

First book of 2021 that I could literally not put down. It follows the story of a broken family that unfolds slowly at first and picks up in the latter half of the book. It centers on a 12 year old girl named Caitlin, longing for an extended family while being raised by her single mother. CW: intense but brief physical abuse, as well as emotional abuse. The story is still beautiful and the resolution at the end is intensely cathartic.

Getting started on this book this morning before work. The author comes highly recommended. I hope I love it and have a new-to-me author to follow📚
On a different note: my #catsoflitsy are all in hiding this morning. Our neighbors are getting a new roof today and the noise is just too much for them. I must say that I understand and I‘m glad that I have to work today😉

Big day with the kids including the aquarium. Now that we are finally home, I can't bring myself to throw away our tickets. Why, you ask? Not for a scrapbook (haha, what is that?) , but rather because they would make excellent book marks. I never use "real" book marks - only ephemera like this. I'm not alone, right?

LizzyM And don't mind my dirty thumbnail...I have been doing a lot of gardening lately. I swear. 7y
ChrisM Same!! Was just thinking that I miss the old, printed boarding passes that left you with the perfect bookmark for your in flight reads 7y

Just devoured this beautiful book! Intensely horrifyingly emotional, you'll fall into it. The lead, Caitlin, loves learning and enjoys the beauty and mysteriousness of nature. Learning about human nature is a little harder though

acorter Have you read any of Vann's other stuff? This book was my intro to him but he is incredible overall. 8y

Starting some Saturday reading - seems like a fitting choice after all the fish I saw at the reservoir today
