The 13th Gift
The 13th Gift: A True Story of a Christmas Miracle | Joanne Huist Smith
7 posts | 12 read | 4 to read
Every day can be Christmas. After the unexpected death of her husband, Joanne Huist Smith had no idea how she would keep herself together and be strong for her three children - especially with the holidays approaching. The cheerfulness of the season made her feel more alone than ever, no matter how much she wanted to reach out to her children and find some way to comfort them. But thirteen days before Christmas, a poinsettia appeared on the Smiths' doorstep. The next day, another gift arrived then another, and another. Each present was accompanied by a note with lyrics to the carol ''The Twelve Days of Christmas'' rewritten to fit the gift and and signed, ''Your true friends.'' Although Jo resisted the intrusion at first, the gifts began to work a kind of magic on her and the kids. As they puzzled over the mystery together - who were the true friends? when would the next delivery arrive? could anyone catch the gift givers in the act? - their grieving hearts began to heal. The 13th Gift is a true story about the everyday miracles that can occur during the holiday season. It is a heartwarming reminder that with love, community, and family, even the most broken of hearts can be mended.

My IRL book club usually reads a short and sweet Christmas book for our December meeting, and this was our selection this year. Sometimes they‘re super sappy, but this one doesn‘t go too far down that path, although it could have.

The family is still reeling from the sudden death of the author‘s husband in October, and she‘s not feeling Christmas AT ALL. Then some #angels begin to leave festive gifts on the doorstep.

Susanita Yes, we do find out at the end who left the gifts and why. 2y

Between a pick and so-so for me. I went back and forth with ebook and audiobook and I recommend skipping the audiobook.

Wow...what a snot bomb. This just a simple story how a family was able to unite during a grieving process by the kindness of a few strangers. Wonderful story.

Every year I start a Christmas book on December 1st. I‘m very excited about this year‘s choice.

Having one of those Ohmconnect hours where you turn off plug-in electronic/electrical stuff for an hour. They really are quite peaceful.

Just finished this! It is no great literary work, but is a great holiday relaxing read...takes no time at all, and gives you Christmas warm fuzzies 🎄❤

I want to pick this and rate it so-so at the same time. It made me laugh and cry and empathize with this family. In the end there some inspiring thoughts of faith and believing.
