Splinter the Silence | Val McDermid

Smooth. Confident. Deeply satisfying. What else can you say about McDermid s writing? . . . The Jordan-Hill relationship remains the star of the show . . . It s a match made in heaven amid hell on earth. "Entertainment Weekly" (editor s choice) on "The Torment of Others" Widely recognized as one of our finest crime writers, with numerous accolades and legions of devoted readers worldwide, internationally bestselling author Val McDermid is back with the latest installment in her much beloved series featuring psychologist Tony Hill and former police detective Carol Jordan. "Splinter the Silence" is an adrenaline-fuelled rollercoaster guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat: a masterful novel centered on the mysterious deaths of several women who were the victims of vicious cyberbullying. Is it violence if it s virtual? The outspoken women targeted by the increasingly cruel internet trolls and bullies would probably say so. For some of them, the torrents of bile and vicious threats prove too much. They begin to silence themselves in a series of high-profile suicides. Or do they? Tony Hill isn t convinced. But he s the only one. Former cop Carol Jordan is too busy messing up her life to care. Until she gets an unexpected second chance. Now it s game on, and the stakes have never been higher. Unpredictable and unputdownable, "Splinter the Silence" is a must-read that cements Val McDermid s place as one of the best crime writers in the business. Hill and Jordan dominate as brilliantly as ever. "Times Saturday Review" (UK) on "Cross and Burn""

Pickpick

Tony and Carol are dancing around a sort of reconciliation, but Carol's hitting the bottle and a drunk driving bust threatens to put the kybosh on her new chance before it's even started. Val McD. can do little wrong for me and this one doesn't disappoint.

Finished this book during the #readathon. This was a great read and good to see Tony and Carol getting on much better. Now looking to get to the new one published this year, Insidious Intent. Hope to read that during half-term week (week after next). This is still one of my favourite series, and highly recommended.

Karkar @Andrew65 What is the name of the app you are using here? 7y
TrishB I need to get back into these! Not sure what number the last one was I read but always enjoyed these two. 7y
Andrew65 @TrishB I agree the dynamics between Tony and Carol, as well as the crime they are trying to solve always makes these enjoyable. 7y

I started listening to this book on my commute to work today. This is a re-read for me before I start the latest book in the series (which I hope to pick up from the library tomorrow). I do love this series and it is great to be back with Tony Hill and Carol Jordan. I cannot recommend this series highly enough! Have had to wait patiently for the latest book (Insidious Intent) to be available - a long reservation list!

minkyb The series is on my list! 7y
Andrew65 You've got a delight ahead of you. 😊 7y

Bailedbailed

This is an audio book but I have to bail...the narrator's accents are driving me nuts! I feel bad for not going on but his voice is distracting me from the story. An interesting premise so I might see if I can pick the book up at the library or second hand at some point.

Jess_Read_This Did you listen to the Audible version? I was thinking of trying that one since the ending is extended by an additional conference session written by Atwood... but I don't want to bother if the narrator isn't that great. 7y
Bambolina_81 @Jess_Read_This Now I'm really not sure...Atwood is making me want to persevere. Yes it is the audible version. Perhaps try the sample? Sorry, I accidentally deleted my last comment 😒 7y
Jess_Read_This @Bambolina_81 🤦🏽‍♀️Omigosh. I thought I was commenting on The Handmaid's Tale. I was looking through reviews of it and my fat thumb must have hit my feed instead of the posts about that book. I'm moderately embarrassed now.. 7y

Jess_Read_This @Bambolina_81 So please ignore my ramblings.. I was hoping to find a review on the audiobook too. Lol. (edited) 7y
Bambolina_81 @Jess_Read_This No that's great for me! I don't mind bailing now 😀😂 7y

I bought this audio book on sale some time ago so thought it about time I give it a go. I'm not massively sold on the narrator but we'll see how it goes 😊

Needed a bit of escape time from newsfeed follies and haters and waking up to wtf daily last week: found this thriller and coincidently yes! about murderous troller who gets his comeuppance via profiler Tony Hill and recovering alcoholic DI Carol Jordan. Val McDermid rules!
