The Dying Grass
The Dying Grass: A Novel of the Nez Perce War | William T Vollmann
3 posts | 6 to read
"The reading experience of a lifetime ..."--The Washington PostThe National Book Award winner takes readers inside the epic fighting retreat of the Nez Perce Indians In this new installment in his acclaimed series of novels examining the collisions between Native Americans and European colonizers, William T. Vollmann tells the story of the Nez Perce War, with flashbacks to the Civil War. Defrauded and intimidated at every turn, the Nez Perces finally went on the warpath in 1877, subjecting the U.S. Army to its greatest defeat since Little Big Horn as they fled from northeast Oregon across Montana to the Canadian border. Vollmann’s main character is not the legendary Chief Joseph, but his pursuer, General Oliver Otis Howard, the brave, shy, tormented, devoutly Christian Civil War veteran. In this novel, we see him as commander, father, son, husband, friend, and killer.Teeming with many vivid characters on both sides of the conflict, and written in an original style in which the printed page works as a stage with multiple layers of foreground and background, The Dying Grass is another mesmerizing achievement from one of the most ambitious writers of our time. From the Hardcover edition.

Y'all am so excited about this find! If I'm right, this book has two distinctive writing styles to denote the Native American and US Army voice - I am fascinated by this book! #historicalfiction #ushistory #grandrapids #mi #bookaddict

ApoptyGina69 I've really liked the Vollmann books I've read. How is it divided? Maybe in chunks over the fall & winter is the way to go. 8y

Happy birthday to William T Vollman (born 1959). He is an author I don't have much direct experience with, instead admiring his ambition and scope from a distance, intimidated by the breadth and depth of his work. Maybe this is the year that changes. #bookishbirthdays

Mayread I'd suggest starting w Rainbow Stories or other earlier work, then reading some of his NF (on violence then Imperial?) and coming back round to his longer series & doorstoppers. He's also worth reading a bit about-- his life being as strange as some of his characters. I've seen him read a number of times & he's both staggeringly intelligent and weird as fuck. (Something he's altogether just fine about.) 8y
brendanmleonard @Skiles I got Rainbow Stories from the library! Thank you. 8y
