This is the story the KKK‘s rise to prominence in the state of Indiana and throughout the US and the crime and subsequent court case that resulted in the high-water mark for the organization‘s power and influence. This is American history that everyone should know, but that no one learns in school. I was left wondering, if it wasn‘t for Grand Dragon D.C. Stephenson‘s violent and criminal behavior, how much more power would the Klan have amassed?

JoeMo Since reading this, I‘ve added a number of Egan‘s other works to my TBR! @Amiable and @monalyisha I‘m still chipping away at that golden #auldlangespine list. #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 6d
Amiable If you‘re looking for others, definitely read this one, too —it‘s my favorite of Egan‘s: (edited) 6d

...evidence of 150 riots in the 13 colonies from 1765 through 1769--and there were undoubtedly more he did not detect. During the early 1770s, according to Gilje, the rioting continued on a similar scale.

The author goes into great detail about the history of NASA, government contractors, and astronauts. While the book is about the Challenger you learn a lot about the workings of getting all space shuttles into orbit. Once again we find out that greed and not listening to the experts is the thing that will doom a project every time. What a tragedy. Great work writing a riveting book that was never a slog to get through despite all the detail.

Texreader I‘ve been wondering about reading this book. Your review pushed me over the edge. Excellent review 2w
Suet624 @Texreader it‘s a thick book and looked daunting but it was so informative. Hope you like it. 2w
Texreader @Suet624 My son hopes to work for or with NASA building rockets someday so if it‘s good writing, I want to read it. 2w
Suet624 @Texreader definitely worth your while then. 🙂 2w

#RealHistory @Librarybelle

George Floyd was murdered in fairly recent history, but this book is so well researched that it takes the reader all the way back to his family roots during times of slavery and sharecropping. I am so glad I read it. I came out of the experience with a better understanding of systemic racism and the conviction that we can never ever give up the fight for justice. George Floyd!

Librarybelle Great review! 2w
Suet624 I‘ve never heard of this book. Thanks for the review. 2w
TheBookHippie This story is so unbelievably sad. Necessary read. 1w

Throwing in the towel in this one…I just don‘t have the headspace for it during all the craziness that is May. I‘m not sure if it‘s a DNF or a Not-Right-Now…

It‘s my May #doublespin pick. @TheAromaofBooks

It was 250 years ago that our great experiment with democracy began. So, I read the first volume in Rick Atkinson's wonderful history of the Revolutionary War.
