Pickpick

The premise of this book is so intriguing, just the introduction had enough “wait really?” moments that I wondered how the whole book would go, but I think Woodard laid out his argument well, and the experience I have in the different “nations” in this country all track with what he was saying.
It also helps just to understand people‘s politics & ideals. The end is an interesting hypothesis and would have felt far-fetched 3 months ago, but now? 😬

#realhistory Erasure of stories & history is becoming a real & scary thing in the US. There are many people in our society that have made significant contributions, not just white men. It‘s important to keep pushing back on this new narrative. Diversity makes us better, Equity makes us better, Inclusion makes us better.

Larson is a good author. But there was some language that felt wrong. I think it came from primary sources. But it was weird. Using the term “relationship” to describe owners having sex with women and girls they own is a weird, racist, old fashioned soft pedaling of rape. You can‘t consent, if you can‘t safely say “No”.

Time I get to this one . @Librarybelle suggested the tag #RealHistory @dabbe suggested #HonestHistory Remembering the sanitary history of my school days , I remember thinking, is this all there is? Doesn‘t seem some people, stories are left out ? Over the years there are more options available. Older ones below.

Pickpick

This factual account of the five months between Lincoln‘s election and the start of the civil war was well-written and absorbing. A non fiction narrative that produced insights on the values, thoughts and emotions of famous people as well as the lesser known characters. The increase of rhetoric and missed opportunities for unity made secession certain. An interesting read but I found it, sadly, very relatable to our current times.

Fair warning…this may be a bit political. Though, as @TheBookHippie recently posted, reading is political.

I am beyond angry. Today‘s loss of IMLS, and the recent news of the future changes at the Smithsonian, are terrifying. Imagine a world without the services you rely on at the library or visiting a museum that provides a sanitized, incorrect history. In the US, that‘s what we will soon see.

So, I plan to read one nonfiction title a month ⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️ …that tells a full picture of history, not a sanitized version of a certain point of view. History is made of layers, and up until fairly recently, most of the stories we know come from the winners or those with the loudest voice in the room. The last 20-25 years has seen an increase in the stories hidden for decades, because they were of individuals who were not of a certain demographic. The news is out; you cannot remove these people from ⬇️ 2w
Librarybelle ⬆️ …existence again. I want to read these #RealHistory titles to keep the memory of those silenced voices alive. Feel free to join if you wish. This is more of a read what you wish each month, and perhaps I‘ll collect a bibliography of titles read. History is so important. The silenced voices are important. Books are important. My choice for April is this book way too long on my shelf. I‘m passed due reading it. 2w

ncsufoxes A few weeks ago I pulled this book back off my shelf. I‘ve read about a 1/4 of it & haven‘t gotten back to it. It‘s one I need to get to but right I feel like there are too many important books to consume right now. All of this right now is so infuriating & well the only way to put is f—-ed up. (edited) 2w
Librarybelle @ncsufoxes It totally is. Ugh! 1w
