Harry Dresden is a wizard, the only one in the Chicago phone book. He uses his arcane powers to investigate the supernatural, often assisting the Special Investigations Unit of the Chicago P.D. with cases that are beyond their comprehension. But Harry must use his powers carefully. Because of a dark incident in his past, he is kept under close watch by the ruling body of wizards known as the White Council. Any violation of the Seven Laws of Magic will cost him dearly-perhaps even his life. Now Harry's latest investigation has pushed him to the precipice. He's up against mysterious murders by magic that some believe only he could have committed-even Harry's best friend doubts his innocence-and a gangland boss who wants Harry to stay out of the way. From all fronts, storm clouds are gathering around a beleaguered Harry Dresden. Maelstrom continues the adaptation of Storm Front, the first book in Jim Butcher's New York Times bestselling series. This stunningly illustrated story will thrill old fans and win new ones, with eye-catching artwork by the amazing Ardian Syaf and a riveting story of paranormal adventure.

This is a great Urban Fantasy novel, with an original plot that moves along at a cracking pace. The characters are well developed and our flawed hero Harry is one of most likable characters I have come across. I will be continuing with this series.

Finished this one pretty quickly. In keeping with my wizard/supernatural bent as of late. A graphic novel retelling of the first in the series about a Chicagoland wizard just trying to make a living and STAY living!

And for #Junebookbugs #Urbanfantasy THE DRESDEN FILES! @RealLifeReading

Harry Dresden is so awesome!
I have only read the first three so far...starting on number four soon. My favorite part up to date is Harry going to a vampire party dressed, not only as a vampire, but a very cheesy one!!!!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great series, and the books get so much better as they go (if you can believe that, they actually get more awesome!) 😃 7y
Texreader Are these graphic novels? 7y
TaylorMay I read the first 2 and really enjoyed them. I know a few people who really loved his Codex Alera series too. 7y

GlitterGirl @Texreader no, but according to Wikipedia the first two novels were adopted as Graphic Novels! "Other works set in the same fictional universe include graphic novels (several new stories, plus adaptations of the first two novels)" 7y
GlitterGirl @Riveted_Reader_Melissa it makes me happy to hear this! 7y
GlitterGirl Thank you @TaylorMay I will check out the Codex Alera series as well! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TaylorMay I haves read his Codex Series yet, but I absolutely loved and recommend his new Cinder Spires too. 7y
JazzFeathers I really need to read these stories. Meant yo for years, but for some reasons, haven't yet... 7y
Texreader @Maatje Ok. I think I want to check these out. 7y
Ukulelebob I can't wait until the next one comes out 7y
TaylorMay @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I started his Cinder Spires series a while ago but had to return it to the library. Cannot wait to finish it 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TaylorMay I really enjoyed it too! 7y

Ugh. I don't know if I can make it thru this book with "dudebro" lines like these.

Mehso-so

The writing did settle down once the action took off. The voice of the main character did set my teeth on edge a bit.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Honestly they do get much better as they go along. The first one or two I do remember as being over the top trying to duplicate the old PI film noir beginnings...PI in office and this broad walks in, and of course she needs his help desperately, but she trouble. Tip of the hat ;) ;) But they get ... 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...so much better as the character grows and he grows as a writer. I remember reading the first couple 1 here, 1 a few months later...then you get to a point and the story just takes off. 8y
Keryntalia Agree that the series gets better - I accidentally started with the fifth in the series, and was jarred a little by the self-conscious style when I went back to the first books. Harry relaxes into his character a lot more, & the supporting cast is great. 8y

Sue @Keryntalia @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I will persevere then (though I think I will need to satisfy my Iron Druid cravings first 😁) 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Sue go for it! He's a lot of fun too! 8y

I confess I'm not loving the way every woman is described in terms of their sex appeal (or lack thereof). Thinking I should write something similar from a female point of view. "His rear was more flabby than firm and didn't fill out the back of his jeans. Ditto for his front".

Kathrin I have the audio book on hold at the library. It has probably been a year, since I listened to the first part... I forgot all about that. Ha, still looking forward to a couple of hours of senseless entertainment! 😆 8y
Dogearedcopy To be fair, Butcher has claimed that when he wrote Storm Front, it was deliberately bad. He was trying 2 prove something to his writing teacher; and all were surprised when it took off. The writing over the series does improve; and there's equal opportunity sexism in later titles #Thomas 😄 8y

Sue @Dogearedcopy I didn't know that - that's pretty funny. 8y
marie3blue He writes girl-power awesomesauce women in his Codex Alera series. I have to admit that I didn't really think about this when reading Storm Front though. Harry seemed to like women but be very immature about them at the same time. 8y
marie3blue I have always cringed when listening to urban fantasy with my husband and the author starts talking about how hot the male lead is. Even in the Mercy Thompson series where the romance is slow burn and not in the fore, the descriptions can be a little awkward to listen to with a man present. :D 8y
BookishFeminist I love this series but I totally feel you--this is a big pet peeve of mine in detective novels generally. They are HUGE offenders of objectifying women. The plots are so great but every time Dresden meets a woman I just go 🙄🖕🏼 8y
BookishFeminist @Dogearedcopy That makes me feel a little better. It still drives me nuts though when it's done "deliberately" but the point isn't obvious. I'm glad the writing improves--I haven't gotten to some of the later titles yet! 8y
