Trash
Trash | Dorothy Allison
7 posts | 10 read | 7 to read
Trash, Allison's landmark collection, laid the groundwork for her critically acclaimed Bastard Out of Carolina, the National Book Award finalist that was hailed by The New York Times Book Review as "simply stunning...a wonderful work of fiction by a major talent." In addition to Allison's classic stories, this new edition of Trash features "Stubborn Girls and Mean Stories," an introduction in which Allison discusses the writing of Trash and "Compassion," a never-before-published short story. First published in 1988, the award-winning Trash showcases Allison at her most fearlessly honest and startlingly vivid. The limitless scope of human emotion and experience are depicted in stories that give aching and eloquent voice to the terrible wounds we inflict on those closest to us. These are tales of loss and redemption; of shame and forgiveness; of love and abuse and the healing power of storytelling. A book that resonates with uncompromising candor and incandescence, Trash is sure to captivate Allison's legion of readers and win her a devoted new following.

I have been overly zealous in my recent library hauls, but hopefully I can get through a few of these this weekend. The tagged book is a collection of highly autobiographical short stories which deal with abuse, poverty, and a number of other difficult topics, but the first few have been well written. I may drag that one out since the stories are so heavy and prioritize some of the others. We shall see.

I volunteered to help pick up trash today. This was everything we collected in about 2 hours. This was ~ 5 blocks. The area wasn‘t necessarily trash ridden either...

My MIL throws away books. 😳 I once found a black trash bag sitting by her door full of books that she hadn't even read, but didn't want anymore. Needless to say I rescued them, so it's really cool to see that others are doing the same!

Read it here 🤓👉 https://www.bustle.com/p/these-turkish-sanitation-workers-opened-a-library-with-...

Erinsuereads AHHHH! monster!!!! So glad you saved them. This is such a great article 6y
JSW I have put books in recycling ONLY IF they have completely fallen apart past repair. But otherwise I give to friends, family, thrift stores, etc. 6y
Rachel.Rencher @JSW Exactly! The only time I've ever thrown one away was when I got a copy of Black Like Me and someone had glued black construction paper on every page to censor it. 😳I was so upset. If you go to the books page on here I think you can find the pics of it. 6y

jpmcwisemorgan If you can donate or repurpose a book please do! They take up space in landfills. Paper doesn‘t break down quite like you think it would because there‘s so much other trash that it all just gets compressed. 6y
Lucas.Rencher @Rachel.Rencher ya my mother doesn't appreciate reading or books it's really sad 🙁 6y
Dragon I donate my books to the Raise-A-Reader booksale. The booksale raises money for local literacy programs. ( I then go to the sale and buynew to me books ) (edited) 6y

Pickpick

Some of the most visceral, powerful writing I have read. Allison is an incredible storyteller and she blurs the line between memoir and fiction in these short stories. The women in these tales are strong with rough edges and sharp tongues. Highly recommend this collection.

If the introduction is any indication, this collection of short stories may be a new favorite. This is worth checking out for the intro alone.

I‘m in a rut. Any recommendation for trashy, you-hate-to-love-it memoirs?

No_One Hmmm, I haven‘t read it, but I have Tatum O‘Neal‘s book on my shelf. It‘s not new, but it‘s the only one I can think of right now! 🙂 6y
Bookzombie I don‘t think I have read any. I keep wishing Stevie Nicks would write hers because I think it would be good and probably trashy. Could you tag me if a list gets going? 🙂 6y
Josie @Bookzombie definitely!!! 6y

Kappadeemom I liked Holly Madison‘s first book about her relationship with Hugh Hefner 😂 #Definatelytrashy 6y
Josie @Kappadeemom that‘s the book that has me down this rabbit hole (no pun intended initially but HA). 6y
