Becoming Wise
Becoming Wise: An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living | Krista Tippett
Im a person who listens for a living. I listen for wisdom, and beauty, and for voices not shouting to be heard. This book chronicles some of what Ive learned in what has become a conversation across time and generations, across disciplines and denominations. Peabody Award-winning broadcaster and National Humanities Medalist Krista Tippett has interviewed the most extraordinary voices examining the great questions of meaning for our time. The heart of her work on her national public radio program and podcast, On Being, has been to shine a light on people whose insights kindle in us a sense of wonder and courage. Scientists in a variety of fields; theologians from an array of faiths; poets, activists, and many others have all opened themselves up to Tippett's compassionate yet searching conversation. In Becoming Wise, Tippett distills the insights she has gleaned from this luminous conversation in its many dimensions into a coherent narrative journey, over time and from mind to mind. The book is a master class in living, curated by Tippett and accompanied by a delightfully ecumenical dream team of teaching faculty. The open questions and challenges of our time are intimate and civilizational all at once, Tippett says definitions of when life begins and when death happens, of the meaning of community and family and identity, of our relationships to technology and through technology. The wisdom we seek emerges through the raw materials of the everyday. And the enduring question of what it means to be human has now become inextricable from the question of who we are to each other. This book offers a grounded and fiercely hopeful vision of humanity for this century of personal growth but also renewed public life and human spiritual evolution. It insists on the possibility of a common life for this century marked by resilience and redemption, with beauty as a core moral value and civility and love as muscular practice. Krista Tippett's great gift, in her work and in Becoming Wise, is to avoid reductive simplifications but still find the golden threads that weave people and ideas together into a shimmering braid. One powerful common denominator of the lessons imparted to Tippett is the gift of presence, of the exhilaration of engagement with life for its own sake, not as a means to an end. But presence does not mean passivity or acceptance of the status quo. Indeed Tippett and her teachers are people whose work meets, and often drives, powerful forces of change alive in the world today. In the end, perhaps the greatest blessing conveyed by the lessons of spiritual genius Tippett harvests in Becoming Wise is the strength to meet the world where it really is, and then to make it better.

This is a wonderful discussion about civil conversation, connection, community, and the uselessness of hate. Makes me want to think a lot more about hate vs. anger, which are of course very different yet often conflated these days, it feels like...any reading recommendations in that area? https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/on-being-with-krista-tippett/id150892556?mt=...

A nourishing read that stretched me emotionally, intellectually, and—yes—spiritually, and I️ don‘t consider myself a spiritual person. I️ found it challenging to read at times, but matters of wisdom and inquiry and goodness demand focus and attention. This is a book that is good for the planet. 💛

Michael_Gee Do you listen to On Being? 6y
underground_bks @GhostStories I‘ve only listened to it a few times, not a regular listener but I️ should start! 6y
Michael_Gee @underground_bks Yes! I haven‘t been listening recently, but I spent about a year listening to that regularly. Some wonderful things have come of that for me. 6y

underground_bks @GhostStories This is not the same thing at all, but if you‘re a Harry Potter fan, I️‘ve been binge listening to Harry Potter and the Sacred Text. Led by two Harvard divinity graduates, the podcast uses traditional sacred reading practices to discuss moral and spiritual matters through each chapter of the series. I️ absolutely love it. 6y
Michael_Gee @underground_bks oh my gosh! Thank you for telling me about that! I will have to tell my sister about it. She‘s an Episcopalian priest and is currently reading through the Harry Potter series. 6y
underground_bks @GhostStories oh she‘ll love it! I‘m so excited for her to listen to it! 6y

I absolutely love On Being, which is Krista Tippets podcast, so was excited for this. I think ultimately I prefer listening than reading, as much of the book seems to be transcripts of interviews. Still, I found a stack of stuff to bookmark, photograph, and underline. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I can disagree with your opinion, it turns out, but I can‘t disagree with your experience. And once I have a sense of your experience, you and I are in relationship, acknowledging the complexity in each other‘s position, listening less guardedly. The difference in our opinions will probably remain intact, but it no longer defines what is possible between us.

Times like these call for more poetry. Oh how I wish everyone in 'western civilization' would take just 8 minutes out of their day, listen to this, and just remind themselves of how the only things that can always overcome a divide is words. Because if we want to know each other, we can. #nobannowalllove4all

I loved this. Not sure what the print version would be like, but the audio was really lovely, like a thematically organized greatest hits of the On Being(/Speaking of Faith) radio show/podcast, featuring Krista's own contemplations interwoven with clips of many of her best guests (scientists, activists, artists, spiritual thinkers, etc.). Like her show, I found this to be intellectually engaging and so uplifting, full of wisdom and hope.

Heideschrampf Thanks for the tip! I'll look up her podcast 8y
Christine @Heideschrampf I hope you love it! (There are years of old episodes to listen to if you do! :) 8y
Suet624 @Heideschrampf Oh, please do listen to her podcasts. Her voice alone is worth the listen. But I have yet to listen to a podcast of hers that wasn't completely fascinating. Find Paulo Coehlo's interview where he talks about The Alchemist or listen to Marie Howe read her poetry. Tippett is awesome. 8y

Fans of Krista Tippett's podcast 'On Being' will no doubt love this book. The audiobook uses pieces of studio and live interviews in addition to the author's personal narrative and musing. I appreciated many of the subjects interviewed, and the introduction to their work, however Tippett as an individual did not move me, and I did not find her writing very compelling.

Spiderfelt For the record, this book was selected by a woman in my bookclub who is a huge fan. She tries cramming her quest for spirituality down the collective throat of our bookclub pretty routinely. My reaction to this book is probably commingled with my feelings for the woman who selected this title. 8y
saresmoore I kinda hate it when the person who recommends a book affects my reading of it. But, I'd say you gave this one a fair chance! 8y
charl08 Love the tree picture. The spirituality books not so much. 8y
Spiderfelt I did, I really did @saresmoore. One of the members told me privately, 'I think I will be too busy next month to read this book.' 8y

Opening conversational spaces, improving discourse, is a huge theme in the book; arguably the foundation of "becoming wise." Tippett certainly opens these spaces in this book by sharing a wonderful collection of interviews from her NPR radio show "On Being." Listening to these interviews was my favorite part of the audiobook. When Tippett was narrating alone, she tended to speak so quickly that it could be difficult to absorb her weighty points.

Krista is the host of one of my favorite podcast. However even though she narrates the audio book I could not get into it. There was too much of guest from her program and not enough about herself and her struggle to become wise
