The Fifth Heart
The Fifth Heart | Dan Simmons

In 1893, Sherlock Holmes and Henry James come to America together to solve the mystery of the 1885 death of Clover Adams, wife of the esteemed historian Henry Adams--member of the Adams family that has given the United States two Presidents. Clover's suicide appears to be more than it at first seemed; the suspected foul play may involve matters of national importance.Holmes is currently on his Great Hiatus--his three-year absence after Reichenbach Falls during which time the people of London believe him to be deceased. Holmes has faked his own death because, through his powers of ratiocination, the great detective has come to the conclusion that he is a fictional character. This leads to serious complications for James--for if his esteemed fellow investigator is merely a work of fiction, what does that make him? And what can the master storyteller do to fight against the sinister power -- possibly named Moriarty -- that may or may not be controlling them from the shadows?

This was an interesting book, and quite ambitious! I really enjoyed it! It does get a little meta. Henry James teams up with Sherlock Holmes to solve a mystery, but the true mystery, according to Holmes, is whether he is fictional or not... and if James believes he‘s fictional... what does that make him? Only Simmons can think up something so crazy. 😂

Mistermandolin @StellaDz He‘s nothing if not ambitious! 4y

Now that I‘ve tackled The Abominable, I‘m switching to reading this one! The audio helped me keep the books separated but now I‘m diving in! #currentlyreading

This was a pefect example of "the idea was good, but too ambitious". Nice characters, interesting plotlines, some cheeky meta comments, but all together Simmons couldn't make it work. This was good for falling asleep with, since there was so much going on that missing a few minutes didn't hurt.

Just what i needed, spent the day in bed after a long weekend putting on our local music benefit. Sore feet & happy hearts. The left one on stage is me ?

Simmons is one of my favorite writers and this did not disappoint. A humorless Henry James with a less than stellar opinion of Sherlock Holmes is a fun read.

I came into this with high expectations based solely on other genre reading of the author and the synopsis. I warned the book to not disappoint me. It absolutely did not. I had expected it to focus more on the quest of Holmes to determine his fictional status, but the story was compelling enough on its own to not need any more attention than was given and there was just enough there, and in other quirks from the narrator to really make it shine.

This is my commute listen. So far I'm a little disappointed and bored with it. I feel like too many liberties are being taken and it needed a good thorough editing again. The concept introduced was quickly abandoned and it's a neat concept!

Went to the library and got a new book today but still mourning finishing this book today. It was so good, and I'm sad to leave Mr. Holmes and Mr. James behind.

A sensationalist premise that is surprisingly (or perhaps not surprising if you've read Simmons before) slow and steady, with a wonderfully meta Sherlock questioning his existence, and a fully realized Henry James questioning his. Historical fiction done right.

This book features a Sherlock Holmes who has realized he is a fictional character... I'm kind of super interested?
