Sexing the Cherry
Sexing the Cherry | Jeanette Winterson
In a fantastic world that is and is not seventeenth-century England, a baby is found floating in the Thames. The child, Jordan, is rescued by Dog Woman and grows up to travel the world like Gulliver, though he finds that the worlds most curious oddities come from his own mind. Winterson leads the reader from discussions on the nature of time to Jordans fascination with journeys concealed within other journeys, all with a dizzying speed that shoots the reader from epiphany to shimmering epiphany.

I‘m really not quite sure what I read. This is a strange novel that includes different timelines, mostly in the 1600s but also the 1990s, as well as a fairy tale retelling. We get this story mostly through the alternating perspectives of Jordan, a boy rescued from the Thames, and Dog Woman, the woman who rescues and raises him. Their stories include sex, violence, humor, and some quotable lines.

Jeanette Winterson is one of my favorite authors. This is my fourth book by the author and my least favorite by far. The story is not linear and changes perspectives between Jordan and Dog-woman. I was not engaged in story what so ever, I just wanted it to be over. #1001

Daisey I have not heard very good reviews of her books recently. I was hopeful about them just because I really enjoyed her Christmas story collection. (edited) 5y
CafeMom @Daisey This is the only one I have disliked so far so don't be afraid. I loved Oranges, 5 stars for that one. 5y

The twelve dancing princesses was one of my favourite tales as a child. I always liked that in the version I knew the successful suitor didn't marry the youngest or prettiest princess but the oldest because he thought they would suit each other best.

So my #fairytaleretelling for #booked2019 is Sexing the Cherry, which is partially inspired by this tale.

I am about halfway through and really enjoying it.

Melismatic Interesting! That was my fave fairytale as a kid! 6y
zsuzsanna_reads @Melismatic great minds! 😉 6y

Best cover/worst cover, “featuring the author‘s image” edition!

I love Jeanette Winterson but this cover design is so late-80‘s it hurts. Yeesh.

LauraBeth I always have a problem when the author‘s name is above the title 7y
MayJasper Oops. I quite like it. 7y
saresmoore @LauraBeth Same. @MayJasper I don‘t mind the art, but the graphic design just kills me! 7y

Loved this book. The way Winterson makes you dive into a fantastic world where you wonder what is real and what is not, is masterful.

There are novels by Winterson that I like better than this one. This is a kind of weird novel, though with beautiful thoughts and observations, as timeless as the world she describes in the book.

This is on my TBR, so I cannot tell why the illustration shows a person holding a pineapple instead of..a cherry, perhaps? I'm pretty sure it's of significance..
Anyway, here we have 🍒and 🍍

He admitted he was in love with her, but he said he loved me.

Translated, that means, I want everything. Translated, that means, I don't want to hurt you yet. Translated, that means, I don't know what to do, give me time.

Why, why should I give you time? What time are you giving me? I am in a cell waiting to be called for execution.

I loved him and I was in love with him. I didn't use language to make a war-zone of my heart.

peggyriley Oh, I love this book. 8y
