New Orleans, 1912

“Daddy! Daddy!”
The little girl ran as fast as her wobbly five-year-old legs could carry her, irrepressible joy shining in her dark brown eyes. Her pigtails bounced gaily, the ribbons tied around them precariously close to flying away with the brisk breeze blowing in from the pond.

BarbaraJean This chapter kind of made me want to throw the book across the room. Or at multiple characters. 1w
Bookwormjillk Pops cracked me up every time he said Beryl. That breakup seemed abrupt to me but then again Charlie doesn‘t really show emotion. Kind of a weird chapter. 1w

willaful That's pretty much how I expected it would go. :-( Their religion is such a strange and powerful force in their lives. 1w
Cuilin @willaful Yes, it‘s like another character in the novel. 1w
willaful @Cuilin another member of the family, and Charles always underestimates that. 1w
willaful A thought I just had. Julia's marriage to Rex wasn't sanctioned by the church because he was divorced. A conniving person could probably have had that marriage annulled. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Jeez, what the heck? Talk about an anticlimax! I thought Julia would at least talk to Charles about what a condescending jerk he‘s being about her religion. And is he just forgetting about Sebastian?! @BarbaraJean 💯💯💯 1w
ElizaMarie @willaful but—- I don‘t think Charles‘ marriage could be annulled. I might not know the rules of annulment though 1w
willaful @ElizaMarie Well she married a divorced man once, surely she's got a mulligan for that. ;-) 1w
mcctrish I thought the beginning with Lord Marchmain‘s conflicting letters was hilarious which led to the dominoes of who‘s moving where but Julia being unable to marry Charles because of her religion is just a cop out after her first marriage to Rex ( poor Charles is the only one who really wants the house imo) 6d
ElizaMarie @mcctrish He truly loves the house! 6d

willaful I was expecting something horrible. I guess Sydney was too.

Kerr continues to be the effing worst. She deliberately tantalized Sydney and then tried to lure her back. Sydney went to a dark place but I\'m glad she has learned better now. Only two chapters left, perhaps she\'s safe? 😬

mcctrish Kerr is the worst @willaful and if the worst thing that happens is Sydney sees the light of her rushed marriage almost colliding with a logging truck #couldbeworse 12mo
willaful @mcctrish Yes, I think it was the right decision. But I hate the thought of Kerr feeling like she won. 🤬 12mo
peanutnine Calling it off was the right decision but I do feel bad for Milton. He seems like collateral damage in the whole affair 12mo
julieclair Sydney is a hot mess. Calling off the engagement is definitely the right idea. @peanutnine I agree about Milton… I feel very sorry for him. 12mo

willaful Kerr did real damage. Will Milton back out? Should he?

I found this a very menacing chapter, somehow. I kept expecting something dramatically horrible to happen. Instead it\'s low key horrible.

BarkingMadRead @willaful I for sure kept waiting for one of them to bail, I was shocked that they didn‘t! 12mo
