Gentleman Jack (Movie Tie-In)
Gentleman Jack (Movie Tie-In): The Real Anne Lister | Anne Choma
5 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
In 1834, Anne Lister made history by celebrating and recording the first ever known marriage to another woman. Now the basis for the HBO series Gentleman Jack, this is her remarkable, true story. Anne Lister was extraordinary. Fearless, charismatic and determined to explore her lesbian sexuality, she forged her own path in a society that had no language to define her. She was a landowner, an industrialist and a prolific diarist, whose output has secured her legacy as one of the most fascinating figures of the 19th century. Gentleman Jack: The Real Anne Lister follows Anne from her crumbling ancestral home in Yorkshire to the glittering courts of Denmark as she resolves to put past heartbreak behind her and find herself a wife. This book introduces the real Gentleman Jack, featuring unpublished journal extracts decrypted for the first time by series creator Sally Wainwright and writer Anne Choma.

Pickpick

The library audio was available - they got a second narrator to read the longer diary excerpts and shed used a Yorkshire accent, so we got to hear something approaching Anne Lister‘s own accent. It‘s a wee bit boring in places, since this is book concentrating on letters and a diary so it is hard for the biographer to “plot” the book. However, Anne is a fascinating contradiction of a woman as this is an excellent companion to the TV series.

I must get better at bailing - I spent almost half the month with NY witches but them powered through my bookclubs Japanese pick (liked it a lot!), a book that‘s been on my TBR for toooo long (it didn‘t disappoint!) and two non fiction picks from my #nycbookhaul - which I loved!

So I recovered the reading month in the closing weeks!

thereadingowlvina I enjoyed The Poisoner's Handbook 🙂 5y
Mitch @thereadingowlvina me too! Loved that it was a little about a lot - so no rom to,get bogged down or bored. 5y
TheAromaofBooks I don't make a lot of bookish resolutions, but this year I have really been working on bailing on books that just aren't working for me. There are sooo many books I want to read - it really isn't necessary to keep plugging away with ones that I don't like! 5y

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I'm not a "bailer" either. You still did great though! ??? 5y
Mitch @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @TheAromaofBooks I wish I could! It‘s weird, it‘s a mixture of hope that it‘ll get better, my mood will change etc and a respect for the authors time and investment..I‘m just too weak! 5y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego That's a nice way to think of it. My thoughts are more like voting. I can't complain about a book if I didn't read the whole thing. 🤣 5y

Anne Lister was a remarkable business woman, who understood how to manage her affairs & estate, and had clarity over the needs of her heart & sexuality partnered with a level of determination that enabled her to live her own life. She left a wealth of diaries, from which her life, and the society in which she lived are under the microscope. Comfortable with her lesbianism, yet not with the working classes. Looking forward to the adaptation now!
