Little Girls Sleeping: An absolutely gripping crime thriller | Jennifer Chase
9 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
He looked down at the little girl, sleeping peacefully, her arms wrapped around a teddy bear. He knew he was the only one who could save her. He could let her sleep forever. An eight-year-old girl, Chelsea Compton, is missing in Pine Valley, California and for Detective Katie Scott its a cruel reminder of the friend who disappeared from summer camp twenty years ago. Unable to shake the memories, Katie vows she wont rest until she discovers what happened to Chelsea. But as Katie starts to investigate, accompanied by her loyal ex-military dog, Cisco, the case reveals itself to be much bigger and more shocking than she feared. Hidden deep in the forest she unearths a makeshift cemetery: a row of graves, each with a brightly coloured teddy bear. Katie links the graves to a stack of missing-persons cases involving young girlsfinding a pattern no one else has managed to see. Someone in Pine Valley has been taking the towns daughters for years, and Katie is the only one who can stop them. And then another little girl goes missing, snatched from the park near her home. Katies still haunted by the friend she failed to protect, and shell do anything to stop the killer striking againbut can she find the little girl before its too late? Compulsive and gripping crime fiction for fans of Lisa Regan, Rachel Caine and Melinda Leigh. Katie Scotts first case will have you on the edge of your seat and gasping with shock. Overall I enjoyed this book. Loved the characters and an interesting plot line, although a bit of a strange ending to this one. At points early on I found the writing a bit stilted but that may be with the introduction to the series. I felt this got better as the book progressed. I look forward to getting to the second one from the series which I have just reserved from the library.

TheSpineView Interesting. I think I'll wait until you read the second book to decide if I want to add this series to my TBR list. 22h
Andrew65 @TheSpineView Jury still out for me on this one. I‘ll make a decision whether to continue with the series after reading book 2. 22h
Tove_Reads It‘s more about characters and lived lives than about the case itself. I like the second book more case wise, and I still love the characters. I find it to be a bit in between a detective and a cozy series. 21h

He looked down at the little girl, sleeping peacefully, her arms wrapped around a teddy bear. He knew he was the only one who could save her. He could let her sleep forever. This is the first book of the series. The character of Katie is introduced and I think that book 2 should pick the story up and things will get off to a better start.

EadieB Katie ends up captive and Chad and Crisco are searching for her. Read this story and find out how she is rescued. If you love books where the main character is held captive then you would love this book. I look forward to reading Book 2 in the near future. Highly recommended. 1d
TheSpineView Great job! 1d

Starting to read the first book in the Detective Katie Scott series, a book I downloaded free over two years ago but not got to. I‘m reading this as a buddy read with @Tove_Reads and @EadieB. Others welcome to join.

Been meaning to read this series for some years, and now it‘s time to read the first book as a #buddyread with @Andrew65 and @EadieB 🙂

Andrew65 Looking to start this tonight. All welcome to join us. 😊 3d
EadieB I'm on Chapter 4 as I just started this morning. 3d
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb I quite like it that the beginning is a bit different, not immediately murder, and with a strong backstory, and the reader doesn‘t know where it‘ll go. 3d

EadieB Right! I like it too! 3d
Andrew65 A positive initial section, with some interesting characters (including a dog). An intriguing prologue. I‘ve read up to chapter 15 but likely a couple of hours more before I have time to read on. @EadieB @Tove_Reads 3d
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb I liked it, but didn‘t quite live up to my expectations. I will definitely continue with the series, I think it has real potential. I like the main characters. The plot towards the end was a bit meh. 2d
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 I think the first book just introduced her and probably the 2nd book will be better. It‘s just the beginning of the series. I‘m on chapter 70 so I should finish this afternoon. 2d
Andrew65 @EadieB @Tove_Reads Not finished it yet but finding the writing flow a bit stilted, but might be my mood and distraction. 2d
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I list focus several times, but definitely not a bad book, just not one of the great ones either. I believe this series will grow on me. Started Rita Herron‘s series as well, and that first book is better. But I love Cisco and Chad. 2d
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads It might just be the 1st book syndrome. I think we should give the 2nd book a chance and see what we think after that one. 2d
Andrew65 @EadieB Definitely, based on what I read so far more than happy to go onto book 2. I always like to give a series 2 books, and do like the characters. @Tove_Reads 2d
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads What Rita Herron book are you reading? 2d
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Ellie Reeves 2d
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I own the first one in that series so may give kit a go too. 2d
Tove_Reads @andrew65 definitely! I need new authors now that I‘m pretty much caught up with most old ones. Enjoyed the first one and since I have unlimited for another two months I plan on plowing through these series, the Dunphy 4, and some Wes Markin 🙂 2d
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Be interested to hear what you think of Wes Markin. 2d

Then young Dena is taken…..will they find her in time?……will Katie be able to find out anything new? And will they be able to stop a serial killer in their midst?

A fast paced, gripping thriller, which really keeps the killers identity a secret, which I really enjoyed…it kept me guessing…with some truly claustrophobic, edge of your seat moments

Mehso-so

First off - the second half was worthy of four stars. The first half moved too slowly, and I just could not get into the build-up.

The premise is absolutely gripping.

Young girls are missing, and someone out there is placing them in constant sleep in a graveyard he created.

New detective, Katie, war veteran, is appointed to solve the cases. Loved her dog!

Thank you to NetGalley for this advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review.
