This is the 2nd book in the series. I read the first book, The Liar's Bones, so was very happy to get a chance to read book 2. Rachel McKenzie works for the Scottish Fatalities Investigative Unit or the "death unit."

EadieB When the body of a young woman is found tragically killed, Rachel decides to investigate a group of young women that are connected to the hospital. The book has a lot of strong female characters, such as; Rachel, Serena and Mags. The death of Rachel's mom is also looked into a little more. I didn't figure out who did the murder until it was revealed towards the end f the book. 1w

Ellie Black, a girl who disappeared years earlier, has resurfaced in the woods of Washington State. She won't say where she's been, it's up to Detective Chelsey Calhoun to find out the answers. This is a slow-burn of a novel.

EadieB Ellie's got secrets and she isn't talking. It had multiple POV's and a message that women are vulnerable victims and men are predatory and evil. The twists were great and led me to read the book to the very end. If you like psychological thrillers, then you will love this book. 2w

The Bishop sisters, Iris, Vicki and Faith have come to the coast of Maine because their father has passed away and they need to claim their inheritance, the Precipice, a family-owned hotel. With a hurricane coming and secrets of the sisters, there is murder in the air and everyone checking in the Precipice won't be checking out.

EadieB Precipice's 19 year old chambermaid, Charley Kelley is in the mix and in desperate straits. The arrival of the Bishop sisters could change things. Will they close the hotel? Fire her? Discover her habit of pilfering from the guests? Or using a guest room to hide a woman on the run. This is a long, drawn-out story that could have been shorter. It kind of got twisted and turned around a bit too much. 4w

#HowTheBeatlesRockedTheWorld #StephenFKelly #BookSpinBingo #SeriesLove2024 #May2024

This is a book about the 1960's and how the Beatles got started in the world of music. There is a lot going on in the book and the world of the 60's. It is a brand new decade and a new era. It was a real cultural revolution. There was a war raging in Vietnam and young men were being drafted.

EadieB War demonstrations and marches in America. The Beatles were meeting in Liverpool at the Cavern Club and forming their little group. There were a lot of American bands playing too such as; Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. While the Beatles did concerts in Sweden in October 1963 and were coming home, Ed Sullivan was in Heathrow airport when thousands of screaming girls got him to thinking about booking them for his US show. 1mo
EadieB February 9, 1964 they appeared on Ed Sullivan and thousands of screaming girls once again. They appeared on February 11, 1964 at the Coliseum in Washington D.C and 20,000 fans attended. The next day, they gave two back-to-back performances at New York's Carnegie Hall. America had seen nothing like it since the early days of Elvis. 1mo
EadieB Their singles and albums sold in their millions and at one point in April 1964 all five best-selling US singles were Beatles songs. The Beatles were topping the hit parades in nearly every country in the world. This is a great book to reminisce with as the author was there from the start in Liverpool at the Cavern Club. If you love Beatles music then you will love this book. 1mo

Did Katie Hawne kill her mother, Sheryl? That's what D.I. Kim Stone must figure out. Katie participated in beauty pageants as a child. Another woman is dead and with Katie locked up, she cannot be the killer. The second victim also entered her daughter in pageants. Kim vows to find justice for these women.

EadieB This is the 20th book in the Kim Stone series. It investigates mother/daughter relationships. Angela Marsons did a great job of researching beauty pageants. It was a real surprise to find out who done it. The characters are all well-developed and the thought-provoking plot is one that had me reading to the very end of the book. This is a true crime story about a college girl who disappeared. Lauren Spieler vanished from Indiana University. She was seen in public by witnesses and security camera and ended up in a townhouse complex with several wealthy, well-connected male students - never to be seen again.

EadieB The police investigation went nowhere and her body was never found. Was Lauren killed by her recent ex-boyfriend who was jealous? Was she killed by these new love interests who last saw her alive? Did an unknown person kidnap her as she walked home alone? Shawn Cohen has written this book with the ok from Lauren's parents. He is one of the original reporters from 2011.It contains information that was never released. 1mo

EadieB @Crazeedi Terrible! Lauren was an alcoholic and a drug user but she ignored her heart condition and did it anyway and I actually think she died at the boys house and I think they got rid of her in the dumpster and was afraid to tell the parents. Her ex-boyfriend was the one who took care of her at the time of her drinking and using drugs and she made him swear not to tell her parents. 1mo
Crazeedi @EadieB sounds logical if she was not well alread 1mo
EadieB @Crazeedi She was blacking out and totally drunk when she was at the boys house and they said they checked her out and allowed her to walk back home. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks You get so used to reading mystery novels where everything gets wrapped up in the end that it's easy to forget that there are real-life people out there who never get answers. So heartbreaking for her family!! And so sad for Lauren who never got the time to change to her life 😔 1mo
EadieB @TheAromaofBooks it is very sad but I do blame Lauren as she didn‘t pay attention to her heart condition. Sometimes the alcohol and drugs are so addictive that it leaves you powerless. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks When you are around 20 you think you know everything and will live forever. :-/ It's always tragic when someone doesn't live long enough to grow past that stage and gain a more realistic perspective. 1mo

This is the 3rd book in the Cornwall Murder Mystery. It was a very enjoyable read and I loved the Cornish setting. The main characters DI Lauren Pengally and DS Matt Price work very well together and I really liked watching how their friendship is growing.

EadieB Sophie Yates is a young fisherwoman who is found dead on the rocks with a fishing line tied around her neck and a poem in her mouth with the words: "Men must work and women must weep." Soon another body is found and the team is eager to get this solved before it turns into a serial killing. This fast-paced story had many twists and turns until finally the murder is solved. 1mo

Myron Bolitar and Windsor Horne Lockwood III reunite to find a dead man come back to life in this gripping thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of I Will Find You.

EadieB
Former basketball star Myron Bolitar has barely restarted his agency for sports stars and celebrities when two federal agents walk into his office, asking for answers. Assuming they want to talk about the highly publicized Callister murders—of which he and Win know nothing, other than what's been saturating the news lately—he's stunned when, instead, they demand to know where Greg Downing is.
1mo
EadieB
Greg, a former NBA player-turned-beloved-coach, was an old client of Myron‘s, one of his very first. The reason for Myron's surprise is simple: Greg Downing died three years ago.
But according to these federal agents, Greg is still alive—and somehow involved in the Callister case.
Before his death, Greg made some strange money moves, but nothing about his reappearance makes any sense.
1mo
EadieB As Myron and Win investigate, they're also surprised to uncover a seemingly related case where someone was murdered. Then another. And another. Is Greg alive? And if he is, where is he? And ultimately, are they looking for Greg? Or are they looking for a dangerously clever serial killer? 1mo

EadieB It has multiple POV's (Milla, Ben, Harriet and David) and flashbacks to 15 years ago and a robbery and murder that happened. Great twists, turns and red herrings kept me reading until the very end of the book. If you like crime thrillers with history of the past then you will love this book. I am now looking forward to the third book in the series. (edited) 2mo

It‘s been twenty years since Leigh found the murdered body of her twelve-year-old brother, Troy. Her father was arrested for the crime, but she never accepted that he did it. Her hunt for the real killer almost cost her everything…

EadieB
Now working for the FBI, Leigh is called back to New Hampshire when a series of copycat crimes are committed. Only the killer has left a very specific calling card, a plastic army figurine, the same as the one she found on Troy‘s body, and carved into its base: Leigh‘s name.
2mo
EadieB
This case is as personal as it gets, and this time, Leigh is determined to make the right person pay. But when another child goes missing, can she dig deep into her past to find the clue she missed years ago, and put a monster behind bars for good?
2mo
EadieB
This is an addictive and unputdownable crime thriller. The edge of your seat twists that happen are unbelievable. I'm glad I kept reading until the end as I was shocked beyond my wildest dreams. I am now looking forward to the next book in the series. If you like thrillers that shock you to death then you will love this book.

On a cold New Year‘s Eve night, a young woman lies slumped on a park bench. Snow gathers on her hair. If her glazed eyes were closed, she might be sleeping. Nobody will find her for hours…Thirty years later, in the Scottish town of Livingston, a retired police officer disappears from her home.

EadieB A trail of blood leads from the pensioner‘s doorstep to the edge of the nearby river, and as he follows it, DS Malkie McCulloch fears the worst. But at the end of the trail, instead of an elderly woman, he finds the body of a young man.The deceased is identified as a local criminal, and the case appears to be a robbery gone wrong. But Malkie isn‘t convinced. How did the pensioner overcome the burglar? And where is she now? 2mo
EadieB Digging into the former police officer's past, Malkie uncovers a connection with the tragic death of a young woman decades before – and the case is flipped on its head. Is the missing pensioner not as innocent as he‘d assumed? Have skeletons in her closet come back to haunt her? Then another body is found, and the link between the crimes of the past and the present becomes chillingly clear. 2mo
EadieB This is the 2nd book in the series and can be read as a standalone. It's a fast-paced read that is set in Scotland. The plot and characters are enjoyable and the story pulled me in and kept me reading until the very end. DS Malkie and his partner DC Steph did an excellent job with the case serving up revenge."The past will always catch you" is written on the cover and how true was that! I am now looking forward to the next book in the series. 2mo

On the hottest day of the summer, we wait for Molly on the riverbank, desperate to slip into the cool water. But as the sun starts to fade, it‘s clear she isn‘t coming. We‘ll never see our friend again…

EadieB Years later, after an unexpected inheritance, Briony returns to her godmother‘s grand countryside home where she spent her teenage years. Despite its idyllic appearance, the old stone house carries memories Briony would rather forget. To escape the controlling behaviour of her godmother‘s son, Jeremy, Briony spent every possible moment with her best friends, Molly and Samantha, until the day Molly vanished without a trace. 2mo
EadieB
Briony is certain Molly was keeping a secret in those final days. Why else was she acting so strangely? And why did Briony constantly feel like they were being watched? When Briony discovers Molly‘s decades-old bathing suit in a locked part of the house, she begins to piece together what happened to her friend. But, as more skeletons come to light, is Briony ready to uncover the truth after so many years?
2mo
EadieB
This is a slow-paced mystery that kept me curious and guessing from the start to the surprising ending. It is told in alternating timelines from the 1980's and present time. The characters are well-developed with an interesting plot. A good thriller with twists and turns and POV of several characters, mainly Briony. This was a very enjoyable book with a return to the past and how the events impacted the people they became.

Private Enquiry agent Cyrus Barker, along with his partner Thomas Llewelyn, has a long, accomplished history - he's taken on cases for Scotland Yard, the Foreign Office, and even the crown itself, fulfilling them all with great skill and discretion.

EadieB None of those cases, however, are as delicate and complicated as the one laid before him by a delegation of men who, thirty years before, fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. These men want to revive the Confederacy with a warship promised to the Rebels from the British Government in 1865. 2mo
EadieB To get it now, they're threatening to reveal the long-secret treaty with the Confederacy. Barker is hired to use his connections to discreetly bring their threats to the Prime Minister.
With a web of prominent, if secret, supporters throughout England ready to through their support to their efforts to wage war anew on the United States, the delegates are just waiting for the warship to begin their plans.
2mo
EadieB But some of the men are not who they claim to be, and the American government has their own team watching, and waiting, for the right moment to take action.
As this fuse on this powder keg of a situation grows ever shorter, it's up to Barker & Llewelyn to uncover the real identities and plans of these dangerous men.
This is the first book of the Barker & Llewelyn series that I have read.

She walked through the cabin, across the gleaming hardwood floor, past the beautiful fireplace and luxury kitchen. The view overlooking the lake was breathtaking until she stepped outside and saw the lifeless body in the chair – a silk scarf wrapped tightly around his throat, his gray eyes wide open.

EadieB FBI Agent Susan Parker‘s fun afternoon go-karting with her daughter is interrupted when she‘s called to the crime scene of a wealthy local man murdered in his home.
As she delves into his life, she discovers the man belonged to an exclusive yet sinister Murder Club obsessed with the mysterious ‘Clothesline killer.‘
2mo
EadieB The previous victims were all single mothers being investigated for suspected neglect who bore the same chilling hallmark – each was strangled in her bed at night by a masked figure.
But the Murder Club aren‘t the only ones who have been tracking his every move…
A local pizza delivery girl has been closely following the cases and building her own investigative report.
2mo
EadieB Though dismissed as isolated crimes before, Susan unravels a shocking trail of clues from the girl‘s scrapbook that lead to the forgotten women and orphaned children left in the killer‘s wake.
Then another member of the club is found dead in his ranch house.

The newspapers called us the Seven Wonders. We were a group of friends, that‘s all, and then Toby died. Was killed. Murdered.
1905. A decade after the grisly murder of Oxford student Toby Feynsham, the case remains hauntingly unsolved.

EadieB As Jem grows closer to uncovering what happened that night, his pursuer grows bolder, making increasingly terrifying attempts to silence him for good. Will exposing Toby's killer put to rest the shadows that have darkened Jem‘s life for so long? Or will the gruesome truth only put him in more danger?
Some secrets are better left buried…
This book is not like the other books that K.J. Charles has written.
2mo
EadieB It has a historical mystery and no romance. It is 10 years since the unsolved mystery of Toby‘s death and the police have not been contacted. Jem is calling them together in order to figure out the crime. I loved this book and what it does to all the members when the murderer is announced. Esther Markstrom and her artist mother have always been proud of their ancestor, painter Francisco Vella. They even run a small museum and gallery dedicated to raising awareness of his scandalously underappreciated work.

EadieB But when Esther reconnects with her former art history professor, she finds her once-solid family history on shaky ground as questions arise about Vella's greatest work--a portrait entitled The Lady with the Dark Hair .
In 1879, Catalan orphan-turned-fugitive Viviana Torrens has found sanctuary serving in the home of an aging artist in Southern France.
2mo
EadieB It is in his studio that she meets Francisco Vella, a Gibraltarian merchant who sells artists' pigments. When her past catches up to her, she is compelled to pose as Vella's sister and join him on his travels or be deported back to Spain to stand trial. Along the way she will discover that the many parts she has been playing in order to hide her identity have far-reaching implications she never could have foreseen. 2mo

When Juan Cabrillo fails to capture the leader of Mexico‘s most dangerous drug cartel and loses an Oregon crew member in the process, he‘s determined to get revenge. Little does he know that the explosion he just narrowly escaped was merely the latest flash of violence from a machine of war that has existed for decades, dating from the bloodiest episode in Armenia‘s history.

EadieB Cabrillo‘s Corporation of mercenaries may have finally met its match in The Pipeline—a criminal syndicate passed down from father to son across generations. A group that sits with its finger on the trigger of a torpedo so deadly it could level entire cities. With millions of innocent civilians hanging in the balance, the Oregon‘s crew must unravel a tangle of drug-smuggling routes 2mo
EadieB and international conspiracies spanning from the Aegean Sea to the Indian Ocean, putting their lives on the line to find the weapon before its countdown hits zero.
This was a good book but a bit different spin than the other books in the Oregon files. It was written by Mike Maden but not with Clive Cussler. This changed the whole voice of the novel and I found it a bit distracting while reading the book.
2mo
EadieB The characters of the crew did not work together and I did miss this in the book. Hopefully Mike Maden will correct this in his next writing of the book. I think the books should be a bit consistent with the other books as this book feels like a different series. I realize that it must be difficult to write a book following the author‘s death but feel like it‘s important to get it right or start a new series. 2mo

The Plot | Jean Hanff Korelitz
post image

#MarvellousMarch2024 #ThePlot #JeanHanffKorelitz #BookSpinBingo #SeriesLove2024

Jean Hanff Korelitz‘s The Plot is a psychologically suspenseful novel about a story too good not to steal, and the writer who steals it. Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book.

EadieB Today, he‘s teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain what‘s left of his self-respect; he hasn‘t written—let alone published—anything decent in years. When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student, announces he doesn‘t need Jake‘s help because the plot of his book in progress is a sure thing, 3mo
EadieB Jake is prepared to dismiss the boast as typical amateur narcissism. But then . . . he hears the plot. Jake returns to the downward trajectory of his own career and braces himself for the supernova publication of Evan Parker‘s first novel: but it never comes. When he discovers that his former student has died, presumably without ever completing his book, 3mo
EadieB Jake does what any self-respecting writer would do with a story like that—a story that absolutely needs to be told. In a few short years, all of Evan Parker‘s predictions have come true, but Jake is the author enjoying the wave. He is wealthy, famous, praised and read all over the world. But at the height of his glorious new life, an e-mail arrives, the first salvo in a terrifying, anonymous campaign: You are a thief, it says. 3mo
See All 10 Comments
EadieB As Jake struggles to understand his antagonist and hide the truth from his readers and his publishers, he begins to learn more about his late student, and what he discovers both amazes and terrifies him. Who was Evan Parker, and how did he get the idea for his “sure thing” of a novel? What is the real story behind the plot, and who stole it from whom? 3mo
EadieB This is a slow burn of a unique story. The plot has many twists and turns which kept me reading until the very end of the book. It is a psychological thriller about an author who dies and his plot is stolen by his teacher. The book is an instant success. An email arrives and says, “You are a thief.” If you like books about a successful plot that is stolen then you will love this book. 3mo

A four-year-old Mi‘kmaq girl goes missing from the blueberry fields of Maine, sparking a tragic mystery that haunts the survivors, unravels a community, and remains unsolved for nearly fifty years.

EadieB July 1962. A Mi‘kmaq family from Nova Scotia arrives in Maine to pick blueberries for the summer. Weeks later, four-year-old Ruthie, the family‘s youngest child, vanishes. She is last seen by her six-year-old brother, Joe, sitting on a favorite rock at the edge of a berry field. Joe will remain distraught by his sister‘s disappearance for years to come. 3mo

In Maine, a young girl named Norma grows up as the only child of an affluent family. Her father is emotionally distant, her mother frustratingly overprotective. Norma is often troubled by recurring dreams and visions that seem more like memories than imagination. As she grows older, Norma slowly comes to realize there is something her parents aren‘t telling her.
3mo
EadieB Unwilling to abandon her intuition, she will spend decades trying to uncover this family secret.
I read this book and found it very interesting. Joe and Norma were interchanging narrators. It is a story about the search for truth, the shadow of trauma and the persistence of love across time.

A deadly race for the Vatican‘s oldest secret fuels New York Times bestseller Steve Berry‘s latest international Cotton Malone thriller.
The pope is dead. A conclave to select his replacement is about to begin. Cardinals are beginning to arrive at the Vatican, but one has fled Rome for Malta in search of a document that dates back to the 4th century and

EadieB Constantine the Great.
Former Justice Department operative, Cotton Malone, is at Lake Como, Italy, on the trail of legendary letters between Winston Churchill and Benito Mussolini that disappeared in 1945 and could re-write history. But someone else seems to be after the same letters and, when Malone obtains then loses them, he‘s plunged into a hunt that draws the attention of the legendary Knights of Malta.
3mo
EadieB This was a very good book by Steve Berry. Cotton Malone is on the trail of letters between Churchill and Mussolini. He is also interested in finding the Nostra Trinita which the Church is very interested in too. The book is about WWII history, Catholic Church history, the Knights of Malta, and the process of electing a pope and the operations of the Vatican. 3mo
EadieB The book takes us to the geography, scenery, and history of Northern Italy and the Island of Malta. The book is a bit different than the plot of his other books but has a few twists and turns to add to the enjoyment.
