Before Midnight: A Retelling of "Cinderella" | Cameron Dokey
8 posts | 22 read | 8 to read
"ONCE UPON A TIME" IS TIMELESS Etienne de Brabant is brokenhearted. His wife has died in childbirth, leaving him alone with an infant daughter he cannot bear to name. But before he abandons her for king and court, he brings a second child to be raised alongside her, a boy whose identity he does not reveal. The girl, La Cendrillon, and the boy, Raoul, pass sixteen years in the servants' care until one day a very fine lady arrives with her two daughters. The lady has married La Cendrillon's father, and her arrival changes their lives. When an invitation to a great ball reaches the family, La Cendrillon's new stepmother will make a decision with far-reaching effects. Her choice will lead La Cendrillon and Raoul toward their destiny -- a choice that will challenge their understanding of family, test their loyalty and courage, and, ultimately, teach them who they are.

Despite a few snarky remarks about women, I liked this one. It‘s my first time reading a Nero Wolfe mystery, so I was not quite prepared for the man himself and his gruff manner. Told from the perspective of his assistant, Goodwin, Wolfe has to sort out a puzzle connected to a death.

I‘d consider reading another in the series! #192025 #1955

mabell I read one or two - mostly just listened to the radio show! 📻😄 2mo
Librarybelle @mabell Oh! I think this would make a good radio show! 2mo

Did anybody else read the Once Upon a Time series when they were young? I completely forgot they existed and now I'm realizing this was what started my love of fairy tale retellings. I might have to hunt them all down...

LibrarianRyan Lots of libraries still have them. Plus some are being republished currently. 7y
Johanna414 @LibrarianRyan I think I have one Cameron Dokey in my library - I'll have to check out the public library 7y

#headlesscovers is one of those cover trends that I will never completely understand. Didn't stop me buying them though. #photoadaynov16 @RealLifeReading

KilgoreTrout My best guess on this oddly common theme is that they want you to be able to imagine your own version of the character, but I don't know if that much thought goes into it. Maybe faces are just harder to draw 😜 8y
BookmarkTavern @KilgoreTrout That... actually makes a great deal of sense! Thanks! 8y
