Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier
Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier | Neil deGrasse Tyson
13 posts | 6 read | 18 to read
A compelling appeal, at just the right time, for continuing to look up.Air & Space Americas space program is at a turning point. After decades of global primacy, NASA has ended the space-shuttle program, cutting off its access to space. No astronauts will be launched in an American craft, from American soil, until the 2020s, and NASA may soon find itself eclipsed by other countries space programs. With his signature wit and thought-provoking insights, Neil deGrasse Tysonone of our foremost thinkers on all things spaceilluminates the past, present, and future of space exploration and brilliantly reminds us why NASA matters now as much as ever. As Tyson reveals, exploring the space frontier can profoundly enrich many aspects of our daily lives, from education systems and the economy to national security and morale. For America to maintain its status as a global leader and a technological innovator, he explains, we must regain our enthusiasm and curiosity about what lies beyond our world. Provocative, humorous, and wonderfully readable, Space Chronicles represents the best of Tysons recent commentary, including a must-read prologue on NASA and partisan politics. Reflecting on topics that range from scientific literacy to space-travel missteps, Tyson gives us an urgent, clear-eyed, and ultimately inspiring vision for the future.

If I had reviewed this 2/3 in it would have been a so-so or maybe even a pick, but the final third (of written content, because there‘s another 80 pages of appendices) dragged it down. A collection of articles and speeches from about 1998-2012, it is repetitive and outdated. I learned some interesting things early on but that ended. Also, why are there tweets in here? Disappointing. #bookspin done for February.

TheAromaofBooks Always sad when a book gets worse as you go instead of better 😕 4y
RamsFan1963 I'm a big fan of Neil deGrasse Tyson, but this one sounds like a pass for me. 4y
ravenlee @RamsFan1963 this was my first try for him and I‘m disappointed. I might seek out another at some point. Admittedly, this was a find in the library discards, so I didn‘t really choose it. I would advise skipping it. 4y
RamsFan1963 @ravenlee I'd recommend Astrophysics For People In A Hurry and Death By Black Hole if you want to try more of his books. Also Accessory to War, which is more about the connection between physics and the military than just the science itself. 4y

For possibly the first time ever, every human in my family was reading a book! For almost 30 minutes, hubby, kiddo, and I were each reading (hubby is NOT a reader, and kiddo has been resisting required reading, so I proclaimed a half-hour of family reading time and it WORKED!). Tagged for me, Put a Lid on It, Pandora for hubby (strongly suggested by the kiddo), and Calico Bush for the kid. Pure heaven.

“Some studies have shown that only about 20 to 25 percent of the adult population can be considered scientifically literate. And one study found that one American adult in five thinks that the Sun revolves around the Earth...”

This section was adapted from a 2006 interview, in a book from 2012. I‘d be interested in more recent findings - though I know things haven‘t gotten better.

Pickpick

A good collection, probably best read a bit at a time because the themes can get repetitive; the articles and speeches adapted to put this book together are for different audiences, so the repetition is not surprising. #BookSpinBonanza #BookSpin May 2020.

TheAromaofBooks Great review!!! 5y
rabbitprincess @TheAromaofBooks This book actually belongs to my BF and he totally does not remember owning it. I am pretty sure I bought it for him for a birthday, but that‘s as certain as either of us get 😂 5y
TheAromaofBooks haha that happens around here, too! I try to write in books when/where/why I purchased them, but I don't always remember! 5y

May 2020 #BookSpinBonanza:
#BookSpin: Space Chronicles (convenient, as it‘s a May challenge book for LibraryThing)
#DoubleSpin: When Days Are Long: A Nurse in the North (good, knocking off a library book!)
I will aim for 6. I predict The Mabinogion will slow me down a bit.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Some of my fatter ones are in the first five, so I'm not sure how far I'll get!! 5y
rabbitprincess @TheAromaofBooks I‘m glad a Doctor Who novel slipped into the first row 😅 5y

"If I don my pure-scientist hat, I would say just send robots...But nobody's ever given a parade for a robot. Nobody's ever named a high school after a robot. So when I don my public-educator hat, I have to recognize the elements of #exploration that excite people. It's not only the discoveries and the beautiful photos that come down from the heavens; it's the vicarious participation in discovery itself.” #QuotsyJuly18
