Gentleman Jack
Gentleman Jack: A biography of Anne Lister, Regency Landowner, Seducer and Secret Diarist | Angela Steidele
3 posts | 5 read | 14 to read
The extraordinary life of history's first modern lesbian who inspired the television series Gentleman Jack Anne Lister's journals were so shocking that the first person to crack their secret code hid them behind a fake panel in his ancestral home. Anne Lister was a Regency landowner, an intrepid world traveller ... and an unabashed lover of other women. In this bold new biography, prizewinning author Angela Steidele uses the diaries to create a portrait of Anne Lister as we've never seen her before: a woman in some ways very much of her time and in others far ahead of it. Anne Lister recorded everything from the most intimate details of her numerous liaisons through to her plans to make her fortune by exploiting the coal seams under her family estate in Halifax and her reaction to the Peterloo massacre. She conducted a love life of labyrinthine complexity, all while searching for a girlfriend who could provide her with both financial security and true love. Anne Lister's rich and unconventional life is now the subject of the major BBC TV drama series Gentleman Jack.

Pickpick

This account of the life & loves of Anne Lister (no relation) is thorough, not at all salacious (OK, just a little 😉) and absolutely astonishing. What a woman! She owned her sexuality without shame or apology. She romped up mountains & across Russia & rode rough shod over Society's expectations & limitations. And had a lot of sex - at one point she was dallying with 3 women all staying in the same house! But for all her trail blazing...cont. ⬇️⬇️

readingjedi From above...fearlessness, I didn't like her at all. In fact, I found her highly unpleasant. Egotistical, selfish, mercenary, manipulative, overbearing and totally self-absorbed. I wonder if she truly cared for any of her conquests or she just saw them in terms of what they could do/provide for her. 4y
RaeAragorn @readingjedi I feel that she was a proud and strong woman who over compensated for her gender by being loud, bold, and salacious. But I choose to believe that it was her armor, and not who she was underneath. 3y

My next read. Really need this one to be good as I really haven't enjoyed my last two & I'm feeling a little slumpy.

With thanks to #netgalley for this book.

I picked up this biography to read after watching the HBO/BBC series. What a life this woman led (and she recorded it all - even the dirty bits - in her secret encoded diaries). 😮
