Red Hot and Blue
Red Hot and Blue: Fifty Years of Writing About Music, Memphis, and Motherf**kers | Stanley Booth
3 posts | 1 read
This collection of over 50 years of writing about the South and its music by Stanley Booth, one of the undisputedly great chroniclers of the subject, is a classic, essential read. Booth's close contacts with many of the musicians he writes about provide a gateway to truly understanding the music and culture of Memphis and other blues strongholds in the South. Subjects include Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, William Eggleston, Ma Rainey, Blind Willie McTell, Graceland, Beale Street and much more.

If you‘re interested in the authentic history of the blues, then you‘ll want to read this book. Booth functions sometimes as a fly-on-the-wall (e.g., the Elvis article); other times as an embed (e.g., the Furry Lewis stories). He‘s one hell of a documentarian, and his phrasings are often akin to those heard in blues music. The guy should try his hand at novels—he‘s that good a wordsmith. This book is a ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ compilation of articles he‘s written over the years, dating back to the 60s. Thus, some of them might show historical signs of the particular decade in which they were written. This leads me to issue the following TRIGGER WARNINGS: There is both racist and sexist language. I‘m not excusing it, but I will say that these are interviews and stories very much of their time and place. (edited) 5y
Cinfhen Still sounds like a fascinating read!!! Well done 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 5y

1. Red Hot and Blue/Stanley Booth; Station Eleven/Emily St. John Mandel
2. The Last Day‘s of August by Jon Ronson
3. Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland (with my best friend, Nanette)

*Happy reading weekend, all...it‘s 94F here with 90% humidity here...don‘t you guys wish you were here with me? (You don‘t—trust me! It‘s ugh! weather! 😑

Velvetfur I just Googled and that would be 34 degrees over here in UK (Celsius) - yep, that would be just tipping over into 'too much' for us! By the way - I didn't know Jon Ronson does a podcast! I'll check it out, thanks for that! 😁 P. S thanks for the tag too 💜 5y
gradcat @Velvetfur You‘re welcome! Ronson has done two podcasts, the second a kind of continuation of sorts of the first. I must warn you, though, they both have to do with the porn industry, so if that‘s offensive to you, you‘re now forewarned. The first one is called “The Butterfly Effect”; I highly recommend listening to it, then the second one that I noted. ♥️ 5y
Velvetfur @gradcat That doesn't offend me, but thank you for the warning 👍 I'll certainly have a listen! Am I right in thinking he was the author of The Psychopath Test? 5y

Klou Thanks for tagging me!! 💜 5y
gradcat @Velvetfur Yes! Same guy—he‘s really great at podcasting (is that a word? 😂)—the first one looks at how the proliferation of free porn on the internet has screwed up people‘s lives, livelihoods, and reputations; the second one piggybacks onto the first because soon after he had completed his reporting (on the first one), he learned of a porn star‘s suicide and went back to investigate it. Really interesting, I thought. 5y
gradcat @Klou You‘re very welcome, hon...you feeling alright? Doing okay? Hope you are feeling great! ♥️ 5y
Klou @gradcat I'm okay, thanks for asking. My cols is mostly gone, my body is just recovering now. Passed it around my family though - oops. Hope you're doing well! ♥ 5y
Klou Cold* 5y
Velvetfur @gradcat I vouch for podcasting being an actual word 😂 OK that sounds really interesting, thanks for the tip! Sorry to hear you had a cold recently though, but I'm glad you're feeling better now x 5y
gradcat @Klou Glad you‘re feeling better...I was just thinking about you. 5y
gradcat @Velvetfur I‘m not the one with the cold, here—it‘s @Klou 😂 5y
Velvetfur @gradcat Oops! I misread things there, sorry! @Klou I'm glad you're feeling better now 😁 5y
ravenlee This weather is killing me! Had to run errands today and getting the groceries home was about all I could handle - and my ice cream was soft by the time it got in the freezer! 5y
Crazeedi @gradcat thanks for tag, I've been outside mowing all afternoon! The podcast you mentioned sounds intriguing . And right now I'd like some 90 degree weather, it was 74 here today, but my front porch faces north and with the breeze it's still a bit chilly! I have to cover up to read! Lol 5y
gradcat Omigod—you‘re mowing the lawn? Is it a riding mower? I hope for the sake of your hip that you‘re riding rather than pushing!! 😂 5y
gradcat @ravenlee I know, right? And nobody—but nobody—likes for their ice cream to melt before they‘re even home! 🍨♥️ 5y
Klou @gradcat thank you 😊 5y
