A Sense of Community
A Sense of Community: Essays on the Television Series and Its Fandom | Ann-Gee Lee
6 posts
Televisions Community follows the shenanigans of a diverse group of traditional and nontraditional community college students: Jeff Winger, a former lawyer; Britta Perry, a feminist; Abed Nadir, a pop culture enthusiast; Shirley Bennett, a mother; Troy Barnes, a former jock; Annie Edison, a nave overachiever; and Pierce Hawthorne, an old-fashioned elderly man. There are also Benjamin Chang, the maniacal Spanish teacher, and Craig Pelton, the eccentric dean of Greendale Community College, along with well-known guest stars who play troublemaking students, nutty professors and frightening administrators. This collection of fresh essays familiarizes readers not only with particular characters and popular episodes, but behind-the-scenes aspects such as screenwriting and production techniques. The essayists explore narrative theme, hyperreality, masculinity, feminism, color blindness, civic discourse, pastiche, intertextuality, media consciousness, how Community is influenced by other shows and films, and how fans have contributed to the show.

Ooooooo..... is there anything more horrifying than.... eeeeeee.... academic writing! 🙀 Trust it to make even a hilarious, unique show seem boring AF. Though after slogging through the first half of the essays, I was rewarded with some actually interesting and insightful content in the second, so it wasn't a complete waste. Really only for superfans though.

“So maybe we ARE caught in an endless cycle of screw ups and hurt feelings, but I choose to believe that this is just the universe's way of molding us into some kind of super group.”
“Like the Traveling Wilburys!”
“Yes Troy, like the Traveling Wilburys of pain. Prepared for any insane adventure life throws our way and I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to every one of them.” #mold #QuotsyOct20

“We're not even the best community college in our community. Let that sink in. And the cherry on top on this total lack of sundae — I'm failing a remedial biology class on a technicality all because you don't know how to run a school. . . . Shame on you, Dean. Shame on you!” #QuotsyJuly20 Every time I hear the word #sundae, I think of this scene from Community.

“When I was born, I got my umbilical cord wrapped around my neck, both arms and one of my ankles. There came a point when the doctors stopped delivering me and just started laughing. I never needed luck. Never had it.”

“The tool most important to humanity's survival is... respect. The reason I know respect is a tool is because it is clearly not a natural thing. We forget to use it all the time, and we start competing with each other, and exploiting each other, and humiliating each other, and controlling each other... and we lose each other. And without each other, we'd go extinct. And that's a fact. That's my answer, professor.” I miss #Community! #QuotsyJuly19
