The Mist in the Mirror
The Mist in the Mirror | Susan Hill
A chilling, classically-inspired ghost story from Susan Hill, our reigning mistress of spine-tingling fiction. For the last twenty years Sir James Monmouth has journeyed all over the globe in the footsteps of his hero, the great pioneering traveler Conrad Vane. In an effort to learn more about Vanes early lifeand his ownSir James sets off for the remote Kittiscar Hall on a cold and rainy winter night. But he soon begins to feel as though something is warning him away at every turn; there are the intense feelings of being watched and the strange apparitions of a sad little boy. And as he learns more about his heros past, he discovers that they are only the beginning, for Kittiscar Hall is hiding terrible secret that will bind their lives together in ways he could never have imagined.

Wow what a creepy tale. This was a haunting short read and another brilliant one from Susan Hill. She is so good at creating chilling atmospheres. 4* and I think on our theme for #TeamSlaughter #Scareathlon @Clwojick

Is this scary? I have it on my shelf, waiting for the day I‘m brave enough and in the mood to read it. 🤷‍♀️

LeahBergen It‘s not too scary. I found The Woman in Black much creepier. 😬 5y
rachaich The Little Hand was also creepy :) 5y

Decent enough ghost story set primarily around the turn of the century in London and the English countryside. The writing style wasn't my cup of tea, but I suspect that is just personal preference. Bonus points for a wonderful library scene.

The Woman in Black is, hands down, the most terrifying ghost story I've ever read. It sets an impossibly high bar, and while The Mist in the Mirror didn't clear it, it was still a beautifully written, atmospheric and creepy read. While I wish aspects of the story had been more deeply developed, no one does the ghostly gothic like Susan Hill.

The mist in the mirror was an atmospheric, haunting ghost story from the master ghost story writer. I throughly enjoyed the mystery and how the story kept building until the secrets were revealed.... or were they??

4 stars

LeahBergen I just love her ghost stories ❤ 7y
Bindrosbookshelf @LeahBergen I'm slowly but surely making my way through them. They are great short reads, for when you need a bit of a change between bigger reads 😊 7y

I usually stay away from scary/horror books (and films!)😳, but these are the scary books that I own. My tattered copy of Dracula is the only one I've read, many many years ago. The others are waiting for me on my shelf. Any of your favourites among here? Oh, another one I've read was Interview With The Vampire..also read long ago, borrowed copy. 👀👻💀😨 #somethingforsept #scarybooks @RealLifeReading

Dragon I read The Haunting of Hill House years ago but I remember it was darn scary 👻 8y
erzascarletbookgasm @Dragon Ooo, thanks for the heads up 😬 8y
