The Book That Changed My Life
The Book That Changed My Life: 71 Remarkable Writers Celebrate the Books That Matter Most to Them | Roxanne J. Coady, Joy Johannessen
7 posts | 8 read | 28 to read
Now in paperback, a delightful collection of essays on the transformative power of reading In The Book That Changed My Life, our most admired writers, doctors, professors, religious leaders, politicians, chefs, and CEO s share the books that mean the most to them. For Doris Kearns Goodwin it was Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August, which inspired her to enter a field, history writing, traditionally reserved for men. For Jacques Ppin it was The Myth of Sisyphus, which taught him the importance of personal responsibility, dignity, and goodness in the midst of existentialist France. A testament to the life-altering importance of literature, this book inspires us to return to old favorites and seek out new treasures. All proceeds go to The Read to Grow Foundation, which partners with urban hospitals to provide books and literacy information to newborns and their families.

Mehso-so

I found many of my favorite authors in this book (Alice Hoffman, Anne Lamott, Elizabeth Berg, Kate Atkinson, Sark) and loved reading their personal stories about the books that impacted them most. (I also added quite a few of their picks to my TBR. 😉📚) This an older book published in 2007, but I still wish it included less politicians and more diverse authors.

ljuliel Do you recall if Elizabeth Berg mentioned Maeve Binchy ? In one of her books I recently read, her character in the book was reading a Maeve Binchy book, and mentioned that she cried when she heard Maeve had died. I was wondering if Berg was a huge fan of hers and put that in her fictional story as a sort of tribute ? 5y
MemoirsForMe @ljuliel She only mentioned Salinger‘s Catcher in the Rye in this book. But she is an avid reader, so I wouldn‘t be surprised if this was a tribute as you said. She‘s very active on FB, we‘ll just have to ask her! 😊 5y

Pickpick

This is a book that gives the message: You are at home here among your people. Some of the essays were mediocre and/or some authors were unknown to me but, overall, it was a reader‘s delight. The people in this book speak our language and validate for us, serious book lovers and readers, that we are not alone. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“You could read the same text repeatedly over time, and that something fresh and new would declare itself with each reading - was a revelation to me.”

#TBRtemptation post 3! A book about life-changing books by people who have written books, lol. Compiled by a bookseller & an editor, you'll learn about the reasons these books clicked for some very influential writers of varying backgrounds--Nobel Prize-winners, actors, monks, chefs, politicians, etc.--whether for techniques or childhood memories. Berg, Bloom, Diamant, Lamb, Scottoline, Fairstein, are some contributors. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Marchpane Roxanne Coady has a fantastic podcast called Just the Right Book. She's great! 8y
minkyb @Marchpane I just started listening to Roxanne Coady's podcast. Her bookstore is about 2 hours from my house. I'm thinking road trip if winter ever ends! 8y
