The Cider Revival
The Cider Revival: Dispatches from the Orchard | Jason Wilson
4 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
Cider is having a major moment, and The Cider Revival charts its history, resurgence, and a year with the vanguard makers of heritage cider Cider is the quintessential American beverage. Drank by early settlers and founding fathers, it was ubiquitous and pervasive, but following Prohibition when orchards were destroyed and neglected, cider all but disappeared. In The Cider Revival, Jason Wilson chronicles what is happening now, an extraordinary rebirth that is less than a decade old. Following the seasons through the autumn harvest, winter fermentation, spring bottling, and summer festival and orchard work, Wilson travels around New York and New England, with forays to the Midwest, the West Coast, and Europe. He meets the new heroes of cider: orchardists who are rediscovering long lost apple varieties, cider makers who have the attention to craftsmanship of natural wine makers, and beverage professionals who see cider as poised to explode in popularity. What emerges is a deeply rewarding story, an exploration of cider's identity and future, and its cultural and environmental significance. A blend of history and travelogue, The Cider Revival is a toast to a complex drink.

@maggie4483 created this fabulous graphic to go with our #GroupE for the next round of #LMPBC !! We're hoping to read books about food - I've tagged one of the books from my list that I'm considering, but I was surprised to see that I have several options on my TBR 😂 We would love to have you join us, so check out @suvata's profile for the link to the signup!!

Really enjoyed this! I love dry hard ciders and appreciated learning more about the culture surrounding craft cider making that I knew almost nothing about. And the writing was great. (Funny side note: I thought this would be a total escape from thinking about certain intolerable political figures...it was actually not that, because certain intolerable political figures were included in the author's story in an interesting way!)

TheAromaofBooks Oh this sounds fascinating! I work at an orchard so I'm always interested in all things apple-related (although that interest predates my orchard work honestly haha) I'll have to check this one out!! 4y
Eggs @DebinHawaii @TheAromaofBooks Visiting apple orchards is one of my favorite things to do 🍎🍏🍎 4y

I'm learning all about craft cider, domestic cideries, apples, and more. I'm not quite done with the book, but I'm now on the hunt to find good cider in the States. I've yet to find a US cider I like as well as the ones I've had in the UK in Europe, but I'm still searching. (more on thoughts on my blog: https://www.bethfishreads.com/2019/09/weekend-cooking-cider-revival-by-jason.htm... )

TalecArashi Aww.. I'm still bummed the old cider place near me (Poconos/upstate NY) closed, even after all these years. It was an old-style one where you could watch the mashers work while you got syrup or whatever. 5y

Christine We have a wonderful craft cider producer near us in San Diego. They make an amazing, very dry cider (plus seasonal flavors infused with interesting ingredients) and have turned me into a cider lover. 5y
BethFishReads @Christine wow. You‘re so lucky. I live in apple country — there must be some sort of local producer. I need to investigate. 5y
