Beside Myself
Beside Myself | Ann Morgan
Six-year-old Helen and Ellie are identical twins, but Helen is smarter, more popular, and their mother's favorite. Ellie, on the other hand, requires special instruction at school, is friendless, and is punished at every turn. Until they decide to swap places--just for fun, and just for one day--and Ellie refuses to switch back. Everything of Helen's, from her toys to her friends to her identity, now belongs to her sister. With those around her oblivious to her plight, the girl who used to be Helen loses her sense of self and withdraws into a spiral of behavioral problems, delinquency, and mental illness. In time, she's not even sure of her memory of the switch. Twenty-five years later, she receives a call that threatens to pull her back into her sister's dangerous orbit. Will she take this chance to face her past?

How much childhood trauma can we fit in a single book!? The answer is...too much 🙄. Not the worst thing I've ever read, but be prepared to throw the normal limits of believability out the window. Plus it was at least 100 pages too long. An interesting concept, poorly executed.

Book 2. 4🌟. We read this for last months book club read, everyone seemed to enjoy it. I think it did a good job depicting her manic state of mind, I don‘t want to give away too much though.

Prairiegirl_reading Oh yay! I have this on my tbr. It's been sitting there for a while.... 6y

Eleanor and Helen are twins. Helen, labeled the good one, does the right thing, and Ellie, the slower and clumsy one, is considered not as intelligent. One day, as a game, they trade places with each other. Then Ellie doesn't want to switch back. We seem them alternating chapter's from Helen's point of view then and now. How Helen who is now Ellie has taken a downward turn, and how Ellie now Helen has seemingly thrived. But looks are deceiving.

Joanne1 Intriguing. 6y
youngreadrshelf @Joanne1 I found it to be a slow start and then it got rolling and I had trouble putting it down. 6y

Continuing with the thrillers - this one is a thriller-ish. One day two identical twins decide to swap places but when one refuses to swap back one of them's whole life unfurls... I wasn't a massive fan. There is something missing from this book and there it is definitely an unbelievable scenario particularly from the mother - I find her character very unrealistic and difficult to buy into.

Identical twins, Ellie and Helen, swap places at six years old. At first it is just a game, but then Ellie refuses to swap back. Forced into her new identity, Helen develops a host of behavioral problems, delinquency and chronic instability. With their lives diverging sharply, one twin headed for stardom and the other locked in a spiral of addiction and mental illness, will the deception ever be uncovered?

In this story about twins, the plot revolves only one. It didn't work for me on all levels and I think that is one of the problems.

This was intense! Twin sisters decide to switch places as a joke and then one of them decides not to switch back. Chapters alternate between the past and present. Dark and moving and emotional. Very very good. Thank you for the recommendation @callunakeep

DebinHawaii I reviewed this earlier in the year and really enjoyed it--as dark and intense as it was! 👍🙀 8y

This book was amazing! An up close and personal look deep inside a very broken mind and soul, this book kept me riveted from beginning to end! The road from "normal" to "broken" and beyond was presented in a back & forth manner with chapters alternating between past and present in a manner that actually added a wonderfully dark and frenetic depth to the story and main character! IMPRESSED!!

pppooraikul Sounds great! Just added to my TBR stack. ;) 8y

I am also about half way through this audiobook and am LOVING it! It is dark and psychological, and I absolutely love it when an author can actually transport me into the damaged minds of his/her characters! This was a random find through Audible Daily Deals; so glad I sprung for this one!!

An Audible Daily Deal from last week, I had never heard of the book or the author, nor had I seen anything about it in LITSY. It just sounded good. I started it yesterday and am enjoying it very much! It is dark and psychological ... totally all up in the character's heads!
