The author embarks on multiple walks, each taken with different experts in their fields. I've always been fascinated by the relationship between knowledge about a subject and its effect on our attentiveness (or inattentiveness) toward certain details. Or simply the fact that we're too busy to notice these details. 4⭐️

I really wanted to love this book. I *love* the idea of looking at the world through expert eyes. But I feel like this author heard “conflict makes the story“ and took it to heart. She positions herself in opposition to the expert somehow - and is generally gradually won over. But the pervasive negativity really took away from what I wanted, which was unabashed enthusiasm. Great idea, executed in a way that made it unpalatable to me. DNF.

I can‘t remember where I saw this book mentioned, but it intrigued me. It‘s about how our perceptions of our reality, including the everyday, are determined by our very specific interests. We can be in the same environment, but we will all notice very different things. She walked around her block with 11 experts in various fields to see how what they paid attention to would differ. It‘s my new walking book. #audiowalk

I‘m looking forward to reading On Looking and A Curious Beginning this month!

I found a lot to like in this book. Looking and really seeing is something I‘ve been working on recently really enjoyed seeing the landscape through so many eyes, ears, and noses. Now off to walk and look for things.

Pretty good

For the past 16 months I've been walking 4-6 miles per day, mostly in a radius around home and work. I've come across a fair number of curiosities, like the surprisingly frequency of heart-shaped graffiti and sidewalk art in my neighborhood, but I'm excited to learn to see more, filter less.
