The Deep
The Deep | Alma Katsu

Someone, or something, is haunting the Titanic. This is the only way to explain the series of misfortunes that have plagued the passengers of the ship from the moment they set sail: mysterious disappearances, sudden deaths. Now suspended in an eerie, unsettling twilight zone during the four days of the liner's illustrious maiden voyage, a number of the passengers - including millionaires Madeleine Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim, the maid Annie Hebbley and Mark Fletcher - are convinced that something sinister is going on . . . And then, as the world knows, disaster strikes. Years later and the world is at war. And a survivor of that fateful night, Annie, is working as a nurse on the sixth voyage of the Titanic's sister ship, the Britannic, now refitted as a hospital ship. Plagued by the demons of her doomed first and near fatal journey across the Atlantic, Annie comes across an unconscious soldier she recognises while doing her rounds. It is the young man Mark. And she is convinced that he did not - could not - have survived the sinking of the Titanic . . . Brilliantly combining fact and fiction, the historical and the horrific, The Deep reveals a chilling truth in an unputdownable narrative full of unnerving moments and with a growing, inexorable sense of foreboding.

Pickpick

The Deep by Alma Katsu is a slow-burning, goosebump-inducing, dread-filled historical horror novel of heartbreak and hauntings on the sea.

The horror is soaked deep into these pages. This story is sure to leave you chilled.

Pickpick

The story of Annie, who served as a maid on The Titanic and later as a nurse on its sister ship The Britannic. As a maid Annie develops feelings towards Mark, one of the passengers. Later on the Britannic she runs into Mark again, this time when he comes aboard as a wounded soldier.

The timeline switches between the two ships. The story on the Titanic was fascinating. There is a mild supernatural element here with possible ghosts and possession.

“Others were sent here by husbands, fathers, even brothers who don‘t like the way their women think, don‘t like that they are outspoken.”

The second book I‘ve read recently where women are committed to asylums at a man‘s whim. What a frightening time to be a woman. This book takes place in 1916. The Savage Instinct takes place in 1872.

lahousewyfe Right?! I'm reading Mortal Arts (Book 2 in the Lady Darby series) and Lady Darby is reminiscing about her (AWFUL) husband and how he threatened her with being put in the asylum. What a nightmare!

After a full week spent alternating between nursing the hubby and battling the fire of the moment at work, I‘m *finally* relaxing with a spooky book, cozy blankets, and Bob‘s Burgers in the background. Thank God for quiet Friday nights.

Mehso-so

The historical fiction was really well done. The horror / supernatural stuff: not so much. It would‘ve been better if Katsu leaned into the latter or left it out.

Pickpick

Highly anticipated after I loved the last novel from this author - Hunger. In The Deep she spins the historical Titanic and sister ship HMHS Britannic with touches of psychological horror, water beings, ghosts, and curses. There's also a man named Jack, but not the one you're thinking....

ReadingEnvy I read this from the publisher via Edelweiss, and it came out earlier this week. I was a little nervous about reading it during the stories of passengers trapped on cruise ships with COVID-19 but The Deep is distinctly from a different time.

vivastory Is it as good as The Hunger? 4y
ReadingEnvy @vivastory I think The Hunger had fewer moving parts so to me felt a bit stronger in concept .. this one is moving between two ships and two different years but everything comes together in the end. 4y
